The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table: Recipes, Portraits, and History of the World's Most Beautiful Fruit

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Heirloom All The Way!
Author Amy Goldman has put together one of the most beautiful books available on heirloom tomatoes.Once you discover heirloom gardening, you will never buy a hybrid or genetically altered seed or plant again, no matter how they hype it up.Heirlooms will adapt to your soil and climate, and be much stronger, needing limited amounts of pesticides, if any, making them perfect for the organic gardener. Most will have those "old timey" exquisite flavors that you have been missing, but may not have realized it until you start eating them.Who knew that there were so many types of heirloom tomatoes that have withstood the test of time?Until reading this book, I didn't even know that white tomatoes existed before hybridization became popular, and was pretty much ignored because the red tomato was preferred by the public. The white tomato, Great White, is said to have an "Excellent; divinely sweet" flavor, while White Beauty's flavor is described modestly as "Excellent".

Miss Goldman's chapters include tips on how to grow tomatoes and how to save the seeds for planting next years crop. She then goes on to describe the differet types of tomatoes: cherry, globe, ribbed, beefsteak, pear, and oxheart; and then various color groups are discussed, such as: white, yellow, orange, striped, black, and green. The full color photos are all very tastfully done by Victor Schrager, many of them masterpieces of art, which make it so easy to enjoy this book. The last chapter is full of tomato recipes: Gazpacho, stuffed tomatoes, tomato sauces, butter, tomato bread, salsa, fried green tomatoes, tomato chips, chutney, pickles, ketchup, tomato cocktail, and many more.

I bought my heirloom seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, [...], but there are also additional seed sources available in the back of the book. You will not be disappointed with this book.

It will be difficult to find another book on heirloom tomatoes with so much information.Amazon also sells it cheaper than I could find anywhere else.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Heirloom Tomatoes
With tomato season looming, I bought book as a gift for my husband, who loves to garden. He was very pleased to get such a beautiful, informative guide to heirloom tomatoes.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not totally satisfied
Although the author is quite knowledgeable on this subject of Heirloom tomatoes, I felt there were more illustration then information. I would have liked to seen more information on the growing and needs of each verity, also the particular zones that would be specific to those verities in this volume. Nice glossy photos with limited information.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Book for Tomato Lovers
The Heirloom Tomato is a great book for tomato lovers be they a gardner or just someone who loves to eat these red teasures. Amy Goldman does an exceptional job covering what you would expect regarding the selection, planting and growing of these summer pleasures with an added surprise of providing you with some very good tomato tips for uses and recipies. It is a book you will enjoy leaving out to browsethrough the pictures, stories and tastes of what she calls the "worlds most beautiful fruit". You will enjoy it when the harvest season is past and your thinking about these summer pleaures of next season. Enjoy with a little salt and pepper on the side.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great gift for a ventran tomato grower
I was proud to give this book as a gift to an 83-year old gardener with years of experience growing vegetables and flowers from seed. Here is a man who knows his tomatoes, but his face glowed with appreciation to see this beautiful book filled with amazing photographs of tomatoes on the vine, on the table, in recipes, a tomato growers' delight.
Barnes and Noble did not have this book, it was only available through Amazon.com at a very good price.
I'm not a tomato grower to a great extent, but paged through the book to admire the photographs and text.A lovely book for the coffee table or nightstand.
