Product Description:
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

- If I could enter 6 stars, I would!!!!!!!!!
Oh, My Lord. The righteous indignation of some people!!! (Those who gave this masterpiece one star) ...In a nutshell, this book is a gem. Of humanity. Of civility. Of humility. Of honesty. Of literature. The people who have given this book anything less than a fair "score" need to re-assess their own honesty and humility (and, Heaven knows, their sense of humour!!) . I cannot stomach those who refuse to hear other's opinions and there is so much magic, wonder and basic appreciation of, and respect ... Read More

- Not really a good book
For starters, the story, which should be the strongest part of a book, is discontinuous and weak, and the book lacks sufficiently unifying elements. It would have made a better movie and a comedy, you don't expect as much from a movie as you do from a book. After reading, even one quarter through I didn't care about the characters, even their amatureness paled quickly and wasn't that funny. I found some of the statistics interesting but I think a lot of the historical insets come off as padding for ... Read More

- Laugh and learn
If you have never read Bryson this is a good one to start with.I learned about the Appalacian Trail and laughed all the way.His wife must be a saint to let him go off on these rambles or maybe she is just glad to see him leave for a while.

- Cheeseburgers... or Paradise?
Fantastic - and one of the few both I and Mr. Ireland both read and liked.Having borrowed the book, I didn't mark the tons of spots that struck me either as funny or as great turns of thought or phrase. I see Dave Barry moments - but the amount of great information in this book was also impressive. It also had a life realization and ... spiritual ... side that was well done [the TV dinner conversation near the end of the book in particular]. The deeper study of the various lengths of the trail ... Read More
