Product Description:
A raucous, truth-telling look at the white working poor-and why they hate liberalism.

Deer Hunting with Jesus is web columnist Joe Bageant’s report on what he learned when he moved back to his hometown of Winchester, Virginia, which-like countless American small towns-is fast becoming the bedrock of a permanent underclass. By turns brutal, tender, incendiary, and seriously funny, this book is a call to arms for fellow progressives with little real understanding of "the great beery, NASCAR-loving, church-going, gun-owning America that has never set foot in a Starbucks."

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - YUP, BUT...
I find it interesting that many of the reviewers who have rated this book highly seem to be liberals and/or leftwingers. It's even more interesting that the author can present the folks in the book to the greater part of his readership as never-seen-before exotics, in the same manner that National Geographic used to portray isolated tribespeople in the 1950s- it must be that the isolation is the same only not for reasons of distance. Whatever, the USA has yet to try on the socialist policies that ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Censorship Switch-A-Roo?
A good read and an important one, given the times.

This cover seems less provocative than the one I've seen advertised in European outlets, which reads "Deer Hunting with Jesus: Guns, Votes, Debt, & Delusion in Redneck America."

That is quite a change. It almost sounds like a different book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Nailing some of the specifics
You need a few cautionary notes to bear in mind when you read Deer Hunting. They come down to this: The book is highly specific, and you'd have to be careful in extrapolating out too far. The specific descriptions of Winchester, Virginia, are wonderful, and a whole lot of the specifics certainly can be applied to lots of other places. But not to all. The book might convey the impression - Begeant doesn't say it - that this picture is explanatory for all of Red America. It isn't; the country is far ... Read More

And/or those willing or wanting to understand them.Best book I've read in years!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Revelation
I quickly realized I really know very few people like the one's Mr. Bageant writes about so this book gave me a better, and broader understanding of small town, working class people. I'm no snob but this book fleshed out in great detail (particularly the chapter on guns) things that have had me scratching my head for years and I am very happy for that. Very funny writer, mixed into some melancholia here as the author makes clear the BS, manipulation, and ignorance going on in many corners. This book ... Read More
