“Alice Hoffman is my favorite writer.”
–Jodi Picoult

Alice Hoffman is one of our most beloved writers. Here on Earth was an Oprah Book Club selection. Practical Magic and Aquamarine were both bestselling books and Hollywood movies. Her novels have received mention as notable books of the year by the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, and People magazine, and her short fiction and nonfiction have appeared in the New York Times, The Boston Globe Magazine, Kenyon Review, Redbook, Architectural Digest, Gourmet, and Self.

Now, in The Third Angel, Hoffman weaves a magical and stunningly original story that charts the lives of three women in love with the wrong men: Headstrong Madeleine Heller finds herself hopelessly attracted to her sister’s fiancĂ©. Frieda Lewis, a doctor’s daughter and a runaway, becomes the muse of an ill-fated rock star. And beautiful Bryn Evans is set to marry an Englishman while secretly obsessed with her ex-husband. At the heart of the novel is Lucy Green, who blames herself for a tragic accident she witnessed at the age of twelve, and who spends four decades searching for the Third Angel–the angel on earth who will renew her faith.

Brilliantly evoking London’s King’s Road, Knightsbridge, and Kensington while moving effortlessly back in time, The Third Angel is a work of startling beauty about the unique, alchemical nature of love.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Don't bother
I did not like this book. I feel like I read the beginnings of three different books- no ending or conclusions. When I finished, I wondered to myself, "what was that?" Don't waste your time.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Intriguing possibilities but poor character development
I wanted so much to like this book. The stories themselves were fascinating along with the array of characters and how their lives are intertwined with each other. The biggest problem with the book was that the characters were so poorly developed. While the narrative required each character, Freida, Maddy, etc. to be complex, the actual development of each character was sadly lacking.I almost wish Alice Hoffman would do another rewrite of this novel.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Was really hoping for better!
I had so many issues with this book, despite Ms. Hoffman's enjoyable and sometimes lovely prose. The three stories, while completely related, never resolved! The ending was rather sudden and unsatisfying. The sister, Maddie, in the first "novella" was a completely unlikeable character and seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever. The rock musician character... okay... I had the sense that the author had absolutely no idea what she was talking about, narcotics-wise.Again, not a terribly likeable ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Uninspired
The Third Angel is a watered-down Hoffman novel, containing all the usual Alice Hoffman trademarks - rival sisters, love gone wrong, redemption, a ghost, a fairy tale. But unlike her earlier novels, this one has so little life to it that it reads almost like a parody of a Hoffman novel. (Although it's actually an elaborate joke. Read on.)

The story is told in three parts, starting in 1999 and moving backwards in time to 1952. At the heart of the tale is a tragedy which is curiously resolved ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not every book can be a best book
If someone had told me this book was ghostwritten by someone other than Hoffman, I'd believe it.The book felt hastily written, with little of the care to detail that I've come to expect from this author. There were many details, but they didn't seem to tie together well--more like a splatter painting than a portrait.Sentence structures were sometimes awkward, point of view changes were abrupt and misplaced at times and the whole thing felt dashed off rather than crafted.

The three stories ... Read More
