Product Description:
It's late in the fall in Edinburgh and late in the career of Detective Inspector John Rebus. As he is simply trying to tie up some loose ends before his retirement, a new case lands on his desk: a dissident Russian poet has been murdered in what looks like a mugging gone wrong.
Rebus discovers that an elite delegation of Russian businessmen is in town, looking to expand its interests. And as Rebus's investigation gains ground, someone brutally assaults a local gangster with whom he has a long history.
Has Rebus overstepped his bounds for the last time? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, controversial career, will Rebus even make it that far?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Some good stuff, some less good.
There was plenty to like about this book-- not the least of which is Rankin apparently making fun of the idea that all murders these days have to be puffed up into conspiracies, but it still isn't the strongest in the series. Why not? The pacing is a little bit odd-- I found it difficult to hold attention and I always give attention to Rebus books. Also possibly a few too many red herrings. Readers new to Rebus should not begin here-- don't think that it is really representative.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Rebus Swan Song? Hopefully not!
So now I've finished what may be the last Rebus story. I'll just have to go back and start at the beginning of the series again. It's not as if I remember all the details! But as for this one: "There's a lot less to this case than meets the eye."So say several members of the cast of this story. Without wanting to spoil it for you, this turns out to be true, which is strange. Generally, a case builds up into something complicated. This time it built up and collapsed into something very simple. Perhaps ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hope it is not the last
This is the first Inspector Rebus (and Ian Rankin) novel that I have read and it has to do with the DI's retirement. So I still have the rest of the series to go through. But after I have done that, what's next?Hence my hope that Ian continues with some John Rebus retirement stories.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Finale
Could Exit Music really be Ian Rankin's last John Rebus novel? The Edinburgh detective faces mandatory retirement and has ten days to bring Big Ger Cafferty to justice while solving the murder of a Russian poet. There are more than enough plot twists in Exit Music and a cast of fascinating and distracting characters to keep readers alert and engaged from the first through the last page. Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke does her best to give Rebus the opportunity to make his final days as a detective productive ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Inspector Rebus Retires
An enjoyable book.Rankin's Inspector Rebus is always a pleasure and I hope his retirement will not be the last we hear of him. This novel was a fast-paced, complicated proccedural.Pehaps not as character-driven as some of Rankin's work, but pleasurable. Many loose ends leave hope that Rebus will be with us again if pehaps as a secondary character in a new series.
