- Ubuntu for Gummies
I have finally made the definite decision to convert COMPLETELY to Linux and have chosen Ubuntu to be my pardner an home and at work. This book along with others have made me decide to go complete and all at one time, no more playing with partitions and that dualcrap. This book, I highly recommend as it makes your life in Ubuntu not only easy but FUN and easy.
Rating:
- Not as good as I had hoped
I have maybe ten "For Dummies" books and I like the series. However I had been having trouble setting up a dual boot configuration and hoped this book might help with that.Ooops!Nope! All I got were the instructions "if everything went perfectly", which, of course, it did not. There was nothing to help when it didn't work which started right off as I couldn't even get the disk to boot live.
This "For Dummies" book left me very dissapointed.
Rating:
- Simple but lacking in depth
Perhaps I should have taken the title a little more seriously, especially the "For Dummies" part. This book certainly starts at the beginning and does a fairly good job of it, but my only complaint is that most people moving into Ubuntu are not total beginners at computers.I was expecting a little more depth, but perhaps unfairly so, given the Dummies series.

To start with, the CD is NOT the latest version of Ubuntu! It came with 6.1, they areup to 8.1 as I write.
This book isn't for dummies, it's by dummies! I got next to nothing out of it. It's going in the trash, a waste of money.

This is a little light. The on-line Ubuntu community provides a much more comprehensive and helpful resource.
