Amazon.com Review:
For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not Boynton's Best, but a Fun Goodnight Story
There are a thousand good night books, and this one is funny although not amazing -- a group of animals energetically go through a rhyming routine heading for bed.In Boynton's characteristic style, she produces a comforting, lilting, funny and surprising goodnight ritual (why do the animals exercise after brushing teeth?!)This isn't the funniest of her books, but it's a nice library read.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Almost perfect bedtime book
The rhythmic verse really helps lull my toddler to sleep, and I appreciate the way it winds down at the end. I do agree with other reviewers that the "exercise" bit is a misstep, but we get past it by explaining that people would never exercise in their jammies right before bed, just silly animals. We read this one and then "Time for Bed" by Mem Fox, and they're a great one-two punch. If we need another zonker, we sing "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?" and he's usually out cold. We sometimes ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - OK, not a first choice
This book is cute, up to Sandra Boyton's usual very funny standard, but it is not all that great for toddlers and preschoolers--just before bed they all go out to exercise vigorously which is exactly the wrong message to give kids at that time of day!. I read this to my older daughter when she was 2-4; it never really clicked. My 2nd (a boy) wasn't much interested in books unless they involved anything with wheels or firemen so I don't think we ever read this. Now on my 2nd daughter; it just doesn't ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - FAVORITE BOOK BY SANDRA BOYNTON
All of my kids love her books. We read them daily and own almost all of them. Our three and five year olds practice their 'reading' by reciting them over and over again to the baby. They are cute, happy and well done. As a parent, I never grow tired of reading them as with some other authors. Two thumbs up!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Just Ok.
My son (now two) has long loved Boynton's "Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs," so given the glowing reviews I assumed he might love this one too.I was mistaken. This book is a little overly simple -- if you have other Boynton books that have a lot for a child to see and absorb (descriptive features, opposites to compare, etc), this is not similar. I assume it's toned down with going to sleep in mind, but boring a child to sleep is not what *I* had in mind.I give it three stars because I do think it might ... Read More
