Product Description:

David McCullough, author of Truman, has collected his favorite pieces -- profiles of exceptional men and women past and present who have not only shaped the course of history or changed how we see the world but whose stories express much that is timeless about the human condition.

Here are Alexander von Humboldt, whose epic explorations of South America surpassed the Lewis and Clark expedition; Harriet Beecher Stowe, "the little woman who made the big war"; Frederic Remington; the extraordinary Louis Agassiz of Harvard; Charles and Anne Lindbergh, and their fellow long-distance pilots, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Beryl Markham; Harry Caudill, the Kentucky lawyer who awakened the nation to the tragedy of Appalachia; David Plowden, a present-day photographer of vanishing America.

Different as they are from each other, McCullough's subjects have in common a rare vitality and sense of purpose. These are brave companions: to each other, to David McCullough, and to the reader, for with rare storytelling ability McCullough brings us into the times they knew, and their very uncommon lives.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - David McCullough does it again
Yet another interesting, historically truthful book.
Great reading for primary age children so they can know the real truth about the establishment of our nation and the truth about the people who established it--warts and all.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As good as they say. . .
David McCullough writes history in a non-textbook way. You feel the characters and really get to know much more about them than you ever learned in school. Great book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A must read for everyone!
I read this book with a smile on my face the whole time.I found out things about the most amazing people who (for the most part) are unknown today.I finished with the desire to have everyone read this wonderful book.Read it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Yummy
When I'm hitting away at several books at a time that have pages in the 500-1000 range, I like to have something to take a break with that is light and easy to read. This little book has 17 brief stories on personages that are familiar to some readers and not to most. I found it to be a delightful h'ordeuve to snack on while taking a rest from pounding away at the many titans(massive tomes) that I usually like to take on at the same time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good value, good service
Thanks so much for your prompt service, and the book is just what I wanted.
