It’s 2:47 a.m. when Dr. Nick Trout takes the phone call that starts another hectic day at the Angell Animal Medical Center. Sage, a ten-year old German shepherd, will die without emergency surgery for a serious stomach condition. Over the next twenty-four hours Dr. Trout fights for Sage’s life, battles disease in the operating room, unravels tricky diagnoses, reassures frantic pet parents, and reflects on the humor, heartache, and inspiration in his life as an animal surgeon. And he wants to take you along for the ride.…

From the front lines of modern medicine, Tell Me Where It Hurts is a fascinating insider portrait of a veterinarian, his furry patients, and the blend of old-fashioned instincts and cutting-edge technology that defines pet care in the twenty-first century. For anyone who’s ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your veterinarian’s office, Tell Me Where It Hurts offers a vicarious journey through twenty-four intimate, eye-opening, heartrending hours at the premier Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.

You’ll learn about the amazing progress of modern animal medicine, where organ transplants, joint replacements, and state-of-the-art cancer treatments have become more and more common. With these technological advances come controversies and complexities that Dr. Trout thoughtfully explores, such as how long (and at what cost) treatments should be given, how the Internet has changed pet care, and the rise in cosmetic surgery.

You’ll also be inspired by the heartwarming stories of struggle and survival filling these pages. With a wry and winning tone, Dr. Trout offers up hilarious and delightful anecdotes about cuddly (or not-so-cuddly) pets and their variously zany, desperate, and demanding owners. In total, Tell Me Where It Hurts offers a fascinating portrait of the comedy and drama, complexities and rewards involved with loving and healing animals.

Part ER, part Dog Whisperer, and part House, this heartfelt and candid book shows that while the technology has changed since James Herriot’s day, the humanity and compassion remains unchanged. If you’ve ever had a pet or special place in your heart for furry friends, Dr. Trout’s irresistible book is for you.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - He Cares Where It Hurts
This modern day All Creatures Great and Small is reminiscent of the writing of James Herriott, with its humor and candor and tenderness. As Dr. Nick Trout writes of one grueling day in his professional life, we see the inside workings of a veterinarian emergency hospital. This caring vet that any pet owner would love to have for their pet, is compassionate and truthful. What astounded me most was how much this particular vet cared for his patients. I wonder if all veterinarians feel like this. He ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great book for animal-lovers
I loved Tell Me Where It Hurts. I bought it the moment I saw it at Barnes and Noble. Not only do I love dogs, but at the time I was considering going to veterinary school. This is a really touching story, but even though it makes you want to cry at times, I think I laughed more than sobbed. Dr. Trout is pretty funny and the way he captures the quirky personalities of all of his patient's owner's is very skillful. Every pet owner is unique and each one more amusing than the previous one. Of course ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful book
I couldn't set this book down, I only wish it had been longer.I thoughtful collection of stories collected into a 24 hour "period" in a veterinary hospital thrown in with anecdotes from the authors life interdispersed with commentary on the field of veterinary medicine....I just wish he had written a longer book.I hope there are sequels...the chapter on...ahem..certain private part reconstruction had me screaming with laughter....the conveying of the deep connections between pets and their owners ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - If you like E R...
If you like E. R. and other hospital dramas of that ilk, and if you are fond of dogs, then you will probably enjoy this book, which is a condensed day in the life of a veterinary surgeon.Nick has a knack for telling us about the personalities of his patients and the eccentricities of their owners, and there is much to charm in the telling.Even so, the account becomes a bit like a series of case studies and the reader longs for a bit less of the diagnostics and treatment--with all the blood and guts ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good book, very sincere, just not particularly engaging
Tell me where it hurts follows Nick Trout, an Englishman practicing veterinary surgery in a Boston Animal hospital, through a frantic day of work beginning with a late night call to come help Sage, an aging German Shepard with an equally aging and very attached owner.

As Trout jumps from pet to pet and case to case, Sage is the patient that holds the story together; the one he keeps coming back to.

Tell me where it hurts is interesting and very human.Trout shows us the emotions ... Read More
