Product Description:
"When were on the road, all we watch is VBS, and our favorite series is Norwegian Black Metal." (Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters)Documentary photographer Peter Beste has spent the last five years working in the milieu of the Norwegian black metal scene. This scene, with its notorious events of murder, church arson, and self-mythology, is absolutely sealed to outsiders. The international black metal fan base is one of the most devoted, fanatical, and proprietary in the world. Bestes access and insight into this world is unprecedented and has yielded an amazing photographic journey, along with a very popular documentary series on VBS.tv, also available on YouTube. Beste, together with Johan Kugelberg, noted writer, editor, and collector of documentary photography, has brought the images into a hermeneutic narrative that makes for a compelling experience along the lines of Anders Petersens Café Lehmitz, Ed Van Der Elskens Love on the Left Bank, or William Kleins Life Is Good and Good for You in New York.

- Gr1m, kvlt, and fr0stbitten! (Did I mention tr00?)
First of all this book is huge (4 pounds!). Second of all it's full of black metal! It's mostly photography (obviously) but there are also some articles and letters and such. There are a couple (unintentionally) hilarious photos in there, too. For example, there is a great image of this black metal guy trying to look all evil, but there's some old lady walking by giving a disgusted look. Besides making me chuckle, it really does sum up how the average Norwegian feels about the whole scene. But I ... Read More

- Great job!
Book full of excellent pictures giving view not only on persons of Norwegian BM scene but also on Norwegian country. Some necessary notes about the scene and history included, just enough so even the non-fans can enjoy with a little deeper view into the topic without getting scared of what some of the photos show. Book not only for BM fans, but also for the fans of photography. Hardcover with large formats makes it even more impressive. For me, one of the best pictures is the one on the cover. Love ... - A little bit dissapointed
I was looking for this book as soon as I've seen Peter Beste's photos on the Internet, and my expectations were high. Very high.
First of all I was surprised about the book size. Not about the size in general but it's format: I think the pages are close to A3 size.
The binding and paper quality is very good, in my opinion, although it's printed and bind in China (this is the second edition of the book i'm speaking about).
My complain and the reason why I rated only 4 ... Read More

- Black Metal!
Awesome book. Photos are great, print quality id high. Written content is apropriately sparse. The fold-out timeline from 995 A.D. to present is nice.

- true north american photographic art!
I've heard about Peter Beste and this book from a long time ago, I was always curious about it but I have never decided to purchase it until I found a really great offer here in Amazon.
First of all, the book is really huge, with pages and hardcover made of materials of the greatest quality.
The book itself contains a high load of photographs from lots of characters from the norwegian black metal scene, here you can find live photos of typical corpse painted bands or individuals, but you ... Read More
