Kevin Costner's lousy English accent is a small obstacle in this often exciting version of the Robin Hood fable. That aside, it's refreshing to have a preface to the old story in which we meet the robber hero of Sherwood Forest as a soldier in King Richard's Crusades, coming home to find his people under siege from the cruelties of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). After Robin and his community of outcasts and fighters take to the trees, director Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, 187) is on more familiar narrative ground, and he goes for the gusto with lots of original action (Robin shoots two arrows simultaneously from his bow in two directions). Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as Marion, makes a convincing damsel in distress, and Morgan Freeman brings dignity to his role as Robin's Moor friend. Alan Rickman, however, gets the most attention for his scene-chewing role as the rotten sheriff, an almost campy performance that is highly entertaining but perhaps a little out of sorts with the rest of the film.--Tom Keogh

Rating: - This is the version for Rickman fans
I watched this movie for the second time since it was released because of my admittedly late-blooming Alan Rickman obsession.Oh, it was awful, and even Alan couldn't justify a purchase for me.Kevin Costner has the emotional range of a hot dog vendor at a baseball game in all his films, and sadly has the lion's share of screen time in them as well.

Rating: - Blu-Ray Is Kind Of Grainy, But An Improvement Over The Old DVD Release.
The Blu-Ray is kind of grainy, but it suites an HDTV more than the double-sided DVD does. The old DVD release is not enhanced for a widescreen TV. I prefer this Blu-Ray, I got rid of the old DVD.

Unfortunately, this version is on a 'flipper' disc. Part of its on side one, the other part on side two. Most collectors, like me, despise this format. There is no way to know that you are getting a flipper disc, because the info doesnt tell you, and the sellers wont either. Im going to get the 2 disc special edition version of this movie, and trust I will be satisfied with that.
