Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, opted for a Broadway role instead. In this film, Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists. The next thing he knows, the Ryan clan has been targeted by the same terrorists, who invade his Maryland home. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. --Marshall Fine

Rating:
- Good action thriller, less than optimal Blu-Ray
I've seen this movie a number of times, and it is a very good adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel. There is some violence, but it is not gratuitous or over the top as in many movies. However, as a number of reviewers have noted, the quality of the video in this Blu-Ray disc leaves a lot to be desired (thus 4 stars instead of 5). Although I did not see exactly the same problems that other reviewers saw, there were intermittent vertical ghost lines throughout the movie. It is not terribly distracting, ... Read More

- Needs Software Update
When I received this Blue-ray disc, I was disappointed to see that I cannot play it on my 2-year old, top of the line, Sony DVD player until I go to Sony's website and install a firm-ware update on my DVD.I haven't had time to do it yet, so I don't even know if it's possible, but something to think about before you buy.
Rating:
- A Super Thriller
This is an outstanding thriller, a movie I have always enjoyed watching since it came out. Apparently a number of people also did since a few sequels followed featuring the same main character, ex-CIA analyst "Jack Ryan," played by Harrison Ford.(Now, it's out on Blu-Ray but the reviews on that are so mixed, I've hesitated buying it in this format.)
Sean Bean was excellent as the revenge-obsessed villain, a member of a "splinter group," as its labeled - not really an IRA extremist, ... Read More

- Patriot Games [Blu-ray]
I'm a Harrison fan, already owned the movie on DVD.After reading the Blu-ray reviews and a cheap price on sale at Amazon I could help but add this to my new Blu-Ray collection. The menu system for the movie is not as good as some Blu-Ray movies I have. Not sure why, it would frezze my unit if I tried to change the sound, etc. from the opening menu. As I can access the menu once the movie is playing that worked fine. The sound and picture were great considering how old this film is. It was nice to ... Read More
