Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he adds newfound meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true because Chris Martin genuinely sounds like a man picking over the bones of his life, coming up with just as many reasons to be cheerful as seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album--there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. --Dan Gennoe

Average Rating: out of 5 stars
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great album!
A great album with hit songs and includes my personal favorites: sparks, yellow, and trouble. Coldplay albums never seem to disappoint!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - loveit!
What can I say. I love Coldplay and they can do no wrong. I love 99% of all the songs on their albums including this one. Just wishing to see them in concert wasn't so expensive. Jeez!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Coldplay CD
I have 3 of Coldplay's CD's and I must say "Parachutes" definitely beats the other two hands down. Favorite tracks include "Don't Panic", "Shiver", and "Trouble.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great body of work, needs to be remastered!

Coldplay's Parachutes is a great body of work!! I would have given it 5-stars, but the sound quality of this CD needs improvement with a serious remastering. Coldplay is not a bass-heavy band, but most of the glaring flaws are in the lower frequencies. Some songs(#2!) sound horrible on transparent systems where they should be magical, it's such a shame because the music is soooo good. For new listeners/fans, I would not let these issues prevent a purchase. This album is brilliant, a classic...which ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Only a bad human being would like this music
Why don't I like this album? There are three reasons.First, the guitar work is always reminiscent of something else--but you can't put your finger on it!Where is that jangly lick from? It's thievery, for sure, but not all the evidence is there.

Second, what is up with those gravelly old vocals? If you're going to have a guy singing--and already, this is probably a mistake--for Pete's sake, let him belt out a few.Let's hear some shout or some snarl. Not just talking into a microphone. ... Read More
