Product Description:
Epic western story of the confrontations between a sea captain turned rangeman and the people around him.
Amazon.com essential video:
William Wyler directed this epic Western, about the clash of East and West, intellect and action. Gregory Peck stars as a sea captain who moves way out West to marry Carroll Baker and become part of the ranch owned by her father (Charles Bickford). But he discovers that daddy's top hand (Charlton Heston) carries a torch for Baker and doesn't particularly like Peck stepping into his place. Peck also finds himself caught in the midst of a power struggle between Bickford and his surly neighbor, Burl Ives (and his reprehensibly bullying son, Chuck Connors). This long, sprawling tale works because its characters are played by movie stars who know how to command the big screen in a big story. --Marshall Fine

- Great Western
This is a great western movie. With many iconic characters and great locations, this is a lot of what you want in a western.
This DvD looked great on my old tube TV.When I upgraded to a 55" Sony 1080/240hz, the first few scenes looked pixely. After those few scenes, the image quality was good in Hi Def.....

- Wyler Returns to His Roots
According to his biographer, director William Wyler was returnng to his film roots by directing a western. He spent his early days in film directing westerns for his cousin Carl Laemmle. Here Wyler does what he does best: direct actors in amazing performances, and tell an interesting story in sweeping visual terms. The film's score greatly aids the artistic appeal of the film.
Leading man Gregory Peck is a little old for his initial loveinterest Carol Baker (she looks like his daughter ... Read More

- Classic Western Motion Picture
This is the old style western, with two fueding families involved in a long time dispute between two old men (played by Charleton Heston and Burl Ives).A wealthy eastern dude (played by Gregory Peck) shows up in town to marry the daughter of one, and that sets off events. People's life styles are not always compatible. This is the weatern range, with law a long distance away, and people tended to settle things between themselves.
In a way, it is a motion picture about defining courage, ... Read More

- A wide-screen epic for the panoramic screen
THE BIG COUNTRY is what the big screen was created for, and THE BIG COUNTRY was certainly created for the big screen. Wide open spaces in the American west never looked so vast and intimidating, so welcoming and foreboding.
Some have argued that the plot is too thin for such a lengthy running time. When I first saw it as a youth on the screen of my father's small-town theatre, it seemed just like another western -- if longer than most. It seemed to lack the punch of a character-driven, action ... Read More

- Magnificent drama of the west.
Jean Simmons is brilliant in this excellent western. She stands out above all the others, and the others are very good indeed,.
Charlton Heston is memorable, Gregory Peck, Burl Ives, Charles Bickford, and Carroll Baker( to a lesser degree).
I recall seeing this first run in New York City and the enormous impact it had, as a western in super panavision, on a glorious curved screen, not flat, and bursting with artistic energy all over the theatre!!
Buy this one.
