She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke

I bought this CD because I wanted the "At Last"cut, thinking the rest of the CD would have songs as good as or close in quality to that song. Not even! The only song I play on that CD is that one because the rest are such a disappointment.Wouldn't have bought it if I had heard it all the way thru.

There is no equal to singing the "Blues" like Etta James. This CD is some of the best of her work. She is as good as ever.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome!
This was my choice for my first Etta James album. Her voice, choice of songs and music arrangements on this one is spectacular. I couldn't be more pleased.

This tremendous recording combines the soulful singing of Etta James with tasteful string arrangements in the orchestral style associated with Nat King Cole and other pop/jazz singers of the 1950s.

Along with the strings is a good dose of '50s triplet R&B and honking horn sounds ala King Curtis. Throughout, the listener is treated to Etta's masterful blending of controlled phrasing, smooth understatement, and gritty blues growling.

It is not an raw, edgy blues CD-although ... Read More

Etta James...what an awesome singer. I have played it over and over.
There is not one single song that I do not like.
They are all very, very good. I just purchased another CD by her.
"At Last" is my all-time favorite.
