Product Description:
Two gay men living in st. Tropez have their lives turned upside down when the son of one of the men announces he is getting married..Studio: Tcfhe/mgmRelease Date: 07/24/2007Run time: 97 minutesRating: R
Amazon.com:
A likable 1977 French farce (and the basis for the 1996 American remake, The Birdcage), this popular comedy was one of the most successful international films of all time, and even spawned a Broadway musical and two sequels. It tells the story of a gay couple who--when one man's son from a previous liaison brings home his fiancée--masquerade as husband and wife for their prospective in-laws. The film is saved from becoming an exercise in silliness by the heartfelt characterizations of the gay nightclub owners. La Cage aux Folles is one of the funniest imports from Europe and a great comedy in any venue. --Robert Lane

Average Rating:

Rating:
- 3 stars out of 4
The Bottom Line:
A funny and breezy French comedy, La Cage Aux Folles was more recently remade as The Birdcage and it's the latter I recommend to modern audiences; while the original is a successful film in its own right, the modern American moviewatcher will find more to laugh at in the Mike Nichols remake.
Rating:
- Funniest french movie ever
I saw this movie when it was first screened in Australia (1980's)and thought it the funniest movie ever. I have seen the Birdcage and that just doesn't compare to the original. It is so much funnier to watch in french even if you have to read the subtitles. It's an old movie but it's definitely a goodie.
Rating:
- Cannot be outdone
The original is brilliant. The Birdcage becomes a charicature of itself.
The original simply cannot be outdone.
For those who have not viewed the original..do yourself a huge favor and
give your eyes and ears a feast...plain and simple.
Rating:
- No subtitles as promised
I wasn't sure how many stars to give... the movie is great but it was advertised as having subtitles and I was not able to get my DVD to play any subtitles. It would however play the dubbed version which doesn't do the actors justice. I had to return mine and I was really bummed. This is the second time I have ordered a DVD from Amazon and had to return it.

- Birdcage Mark 1
This is the original film on which The Birdcage is based. It is a little sharper in every respect, but just as funny. While in The Birdcage you know all along that everybody's joking, the actors play it for real here. You never doubt that these are committed homosexuals living in a long-term relationship. The highlight is the outrageous male maid - a laugh at every turn.
Although nominally about a gay relationship, this is really just another of Francois Weber's brilliant "buddy" movies, ... Read More
