This classic 1963 Disney film features child icon Hayley Millsas Nancy Carey, a teenage girl whose family moves from Bostonto the New England countryside as a result of their father's untimelypassing.Nancy writes to the kindly Mr. Poppem (Burl Ives) andsingle-handedly convinces him to rent the family a charming, if run-down,house for a mere $60 a year. Ever the optimist, Nancy brims withexcitement at the family's new life, but this "perfect world" has itsproblems--notably an absentee landlord who knows nothing about the Careyfamily's rental agreement.Through hard work and Mr. Poppem's continuinggenerosity, the Careys fix up the house and find life in the rural Mainetown quite satisfactory.Things become tense when their cousin Julia arrivesfor an extended visit, but eventually Nancy and Julia grow from oneanother's experiences and become good friends. You'll never guess whathappens when the absent landlord returns unannounced during the family'sHalloween housewarming party!
One section that may sit poorly with modern audiences features Nancy andJulia discussing how to emphasize one's femininity at the expense of hiding the real you--an indication of how much American thinking has changed in arelatively short period of time.Nevertheless, this is a charming talefeaturing toe-tapping ragtime music, wonderful songs by Richard M. - great memories...
This movie had such an impact on me as a child, I grew up always wanting to live in a "yellow house" (I finally did too!).Always enjoy Hayley Mills/Disney movies but this is absolutely one of my favorites.Great cast and I always love Burl Ives singing the "Ugly Bug Ball"!!
Rating:
- Family Entertainment
Summer Magic is a lighthearted movie that the whole family can enjoy. It reminds you of a time when everything was wholesome and pure. Great actors, Haley Mills, Dorothy Mcguire, Burl Ives. It brings out the kid in you. It's a must see !!!!!
Rating:
- Favorite Hayley Mills film
I am a big fan of Hayley Mills; I grew up watching all the movies she was in when she was young. Although Parent Trap and Pollyana are close behind, Summer Magic is my favorite! I'm not sure if it's due to the story, the scenery, the fabulous cast, the music (Femininity & the song Burl Ives sings on their front porch are my favorites), or a combination of all those factors, but Summer Magic is definately a must-see for any fan of Hayley Mills or of classic Disney films.
Rating:
- Typical Disney of the era
Hayley Mills at her best. The story is simple and fun and you will find that you are enjoying it in spite of yourself. This is Hayley as she was entering her late teens so there is even a little romance.Great supporting cast and lots of fun bits throughout.

- Disney Classis - Hidden Gem!
Summer Magic is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies. My sister and I watched it growing up, at least once a week, and we can still sing all the songs. Both of us have little girls and bought it to share with them.
