"We wanted a tough album," producer Quincy Jones recalls in a bonus interview on this special edition of Bad. Though the 1987 blockbuster would appear to be Michael Jackson's most personal statement to date--9 of its 11 cuts were written solely by him--its appeal also rested more on craft than the idiosyncratic art of Thriller and Off the Wall. At the same time, most of Bad has aged well in spite of its digital brittleness and MIDI treatments of gems like Jimmy Smith's organ solo on the title track. While the third best of his first three Epic solo discs, Bad carries a lot of what people love about Jackson's music. This disc also benefits from two fine outtakes, the exciting, uptempo "Streetwalker" and the Carpenters homage "Fly Away." Either could easily have extended the record's run of hit singles. --Rickey Wright

- Great Music from the King of Pop
Michael Jackson produced Bad to be a bigger, better Thriller. While he couldn't match the sheer phenomenon of that release, he came very close. Bad spawned some of his most memorable singles. The title track is cheesy but undeniably well-crafted and infectious, while "The Way You Make Me Feel" is a classic, shuffling R&B number. "Man in the Mirror" is Michael at his most syrupy, gospel choir and all. Quite the opposite is "Smooth Criminal," with its unsettling lyrics and equally creepy, claustrophobic ... Read More

After Michael Jackson night on Idol, I picked this up.I had forgotten how many great songs are on this album.Dirty Diana and Smooth Criminal are personal favorites.Loved it when I was a kid, still love it today.Great album, better than Thriller for me.

- Cheesy Goodness!
Michael Jackson has truely always been a joke, when I've been around. Truthfully he's never been popular since was a toddler and now im in college. So im not a huge mega fan like some people.(actually care more for Jermaine and janet they produce really good soul music).
As for Bad, it's got great pop beats, everybody heard the songs a million times, and he's got a great message. Dirty Diana definately an intersting song. As for, the way you make me feel. I think he was truely at his peak of normalness, ... Read More

- Far from bad, but not a thriller, either
Five years later he was back with one of the most sonically spotless albums of the decade. That's not a detriment, but "Bad" does sound a lot more mechanical than "Thriller," to some degree because it's so darn consistent.Yes, consistency is good, especially when you're consistently excellent, but "Thriller" wasn't the best-selling album ever because of consistency."Thriller" had a spookfest, the most paranoid song in pop history, and a rock anthem."Bad" has a very macho title track, but it never pushes ...
