Amazon.com essential video:
Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Don't know why I am not surprised with this day and age that Amazon would be any different than all the Banks and Morgage Companies that are out selling misrepresented goods!
Knowing well that my brother could reciet chapter and verse, I ordered the $11.95 CD of Lonsome Dove for his 69th Birthday. After a call to wish him well, I was to find out that the 2 Disc CD is NOT COMPLETE! Somewhere MISSING 2 Hours. I m not a computer wiz I did not see anything were this was mentioned.....WAY TO GO ... - Greatest Western of the Modern era
This book follows McMurtry so well, as the director notes in the bonus section, that there are virtually no dialogue changes. The DVD comes in a two DVD set with the four parts split evenly between the two with the bonus features as well, The bonus features include interviews with casts, director and author and show some of the films highlights including each one's favorite part. The outdoor scenes, script and acting is top notch. The supreme benefit of this epic is the time spent in character ... Read More

- One of the best western's ever
There are enough other reviews here with details of the movie-no need for me to duplicate any of that info. Suffice it to say, IMO, this is without question one of the finest western's ever filmed.
Just MAKE SURE, if you buy it, you get the entire full-length movie!

- This is unbelievable
I can not even bring myself to finish watching this movie. When I first started watching it I was somewhat interested since I had heard all of the hype. After watching 20 mins I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.I could not believe that anyone could think this was worth watching. Then I thought I might be missing something or not understanding some type of weird humor.I have heard people rant about not being able to wait until the series came to DVD.While watching the 20 mins it felt like ... - LARGER THAN LIFE
Few westerns are in the same league as LONESOME DOVE. Simon Wincer captured the heart of Larry McMurtry's beautiful story about a 2,500 mile trail drive. Robert Duvall ( in what I believe to be his finest performance ), and Tommy Lee Jones as two ex-Texas Rangers are perfect in this amazingly, powerful epic ( the rest of the cast is pretty amazing as well ). No western collection should be without this mesmerizing, masterpiece.
