This zany, eye-popping, knee-slapping landmark in combininganimation with live-action ingeniously makes that uneasycombination itself (and the history of Hollywood) its subject.Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on classic L.A.private-eye movies (and, specifically, Chinatown), withdetective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) investigating a case involving adultery, blackmail, murder, and a fiendish plot to replace Los Angeles'sonce-famous Red Car public transportation system with theautomobiles and freeways that would later make it the nation'ssmog capital. Of course, his sleuthing takes him back to the placehe dreads: Toontown, the ghetto for cartoons that abuts Hollywood andthat was the site of a tragic incident in Eddie's past. In additionto intermingling cartoon characters with live actors and locations, Roger Rabbit also brings together the greatest array of cartoon stars in the history of motion pictures, from a variety of studios (Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Fleischer, Universal, and elsewhere): Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Droopy Dog, and more! And, of course, there's Maroon Cartoon's greateststar, Roger Rabbit (voice by Charles Fleischer), who suspects hisultracurvaceous wife, Jessica Rabbit (voice by Kathleen Turner: "I'm notbad; I'm just drawn that way"), of infidelity. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Contact), notsince the early Looney Tunes' "You Oughtta Be in Pictures" hasthere been anything like Roger Rabbit. --Jim Emerson

This is another film, that, along with the Pixar movies, it victimized by Disney. This is NOT a Disney film. The only thing that makes it Disney is the cameo appearances.Forget what the stupid Toontown at Disneyland tells you about this film.Toontown is NOT a secret get-away for Mickey and his pals.Anyway, don't let Disney tell you that this movie is their kind of wretched film (especially considered what the released during these times). It's more brilliant and well-done than whatever Walt ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Roger Rabbit
This is the first movie I ever had as a kid. I think the tap got stock in my VCR about 100 times. I can still say almost every word in the movie. I love this special edition DVD.

The Bottom Line:

The special effects are nifty and I guess the Chinatown-esque plot is kinda fun, but the gimmick ran stale for me after the first half hour and I wanted a bit more to fall back on than Hoskins' growling and Christopher Lloyd's scenery chewing; I can see why everyone else loves it, but I was not especially enthused.
