Loves a dream to a hostess in a seedy new york dance hall. From the neil simon play.Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca)Release Date: 03/04/2003Starring: Shirley Maclaine John McmartinRun time: 149 minutesRating: GDirector: Bob Fosse
Amazon.com essential video:
After several years as the hottest musical director on Broadway, Bob Fosse made his film directorial debut with this movie version of his Broadway hit, which was based on Fellini's Nights of Cabiria. Shirley MacLaine is terrific as the proverbial hooker with the heart of gold, one who is convinced that she will find the right man if she just turns enough tricks. The Cy Coleman score is a solid one; the film is at its best when Fosse lets his cast of singer-dancers (which includes Chita Rivera, Paula Kelly, and Sammy Davis Jr.) unleash his leggy brand of choreography. While the film suffers from stylistic excesses of the period, you can see the seeds being planted for Fosse's future musical film forays in Cabaret and All That Jazz. --Marshall Fine

- Sweet Charity
I saw the original Broadway musical & went back stage as a kid to get autographs. This is a good rendition, but it is nowhere near what the Orig was. I do recommend this to others, as it is a classic & a fun movie. Gwen Verdon was supreme on Broadray, Shirley MacLaine does her best to replicate her.

Requested by my mother-in-law she absolutely loved the movie. The songs were outstanding as you would expect from most high class musicals. And last but not least the price and prompt delivery were very much appreciated.

I do not want to recreate the wheel regarding reviews, but SWEET CHARITY is a unique and entertaining movie summarized very well by the 5 & 4 star ratings. I would like to clarify some of the comments stated in the lesser reviews.
First, you have to remember this movie was made in the late 60's. You have to think about the context of the times; movie making was in it's infancy (or at leat toddler-hood), colorization was still new & you did not have computer enhancement & the cameras ... Read More

What is there not to like about Shirley McClain and Bob Fossee. We had to replace a old video tape which we wore out.

- Shirley Maclaine shines in Sweet Charity
Enjoyed it but wondered if Gwen Verdon should have continued her stage role onto the screen.I remember a serious faux pas when Julie Andrews was bypassed for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.
