Situation: It seems that almost everyone has ubiquitous connections with the world via their Smartphone, iPhone, FiOS, cable, WiFi, WiMax or other broadband alternative. Why should we be thinking about 1980's modem technology in 2008?

I bought the Trendnet 56K USB data/fax/TAM modem for use on a Dell XPS M1330 (which does not come with a modem, but I found I needed one). When it arrived, I tested it for access to the internet. That worked fine, and continues to work fine, even now that I'm in Germany. --However, when I had to fax documents from Word or WordPerfect, the modem does not show up as a "printer" with fax capabilities, so there is no way to fax anything even when you are connected to a phone line.
