- Great device, but directions manual does not cover all situations
I bought this external modem for use with an Eee PC netbook, that has no CD/DVD drive.I bought it to provide access to dial-up internet service in areas with no wireless hot spots or high-speed data ports.The booklet that comes with this device assumes you have a PC with a CD-ROM drive. The booklet incorrectly states that one of the system requirements is a CD-ROM drive. I'm a computer novice, but I have to endorse this product, even though I ended up paying twice as much to have it installed at a computer repair shop!To make a long story short, my rural dial-up modem got fried by a lightning hit ON THE PHONE LINE from a storm that was way in the distance but got me anyway.The dial-up quit and retries showed phone modem error.At the repair shop, I was first told the modem board could be replaced on the underside of the laptop (too much $ for labor time, though); or that ... I'm amazed that so much power can fit within such a miniscule component!I'm considering freeing one of my desktop's expansion card slots and buying another TRENDnet 56K USB modem.I'd give it 6 Stars (or higher!)if I could.

I was not able to get online using dial-up with this modem.Trendnet's customer support was no help (giving scripted answers that correspond to problem, with no knowledge of what they're talking about).Returned product to Amazon (& received refund) after eliminating all other possible reasons for being unable to connect.Nice little USB modem - if it had only worked.

It's a excellent modem usb. Just plug and you have a fax machine to send and receive faxes. I had liked if it was more faster but it's ok.
