It works like tiny, but powerful sonic waves, dislodging plaque that isn't normally reachable by a manual brush, or the oscillating or rotating movement of other power brushes. In fact, dynamic fluid cleaning action can actually make it easier to clean plaque below the gum-line. The bristles on a Sonicare play an important part as well. Their high-velocity movement creates the dynamic fluid cleaning action, while allowing for direct contact with each tooth. Sonicare's bristles are also designed to be extra gentle on teeth and gums.
Smartimer
Smartimer is the automatic shut-off feature in your Sonicare brush that helps encourage you to brush for two minutes, which is the dental professional recommended brushing time. It's simple -- after two minutes, your Sonicare shuts off. If at any time during brushing you momentarily stop the brush to rinse or apply more toothpaste, the Smartimer pauses its timing so that you can pick up where you left off. Although two minutes is recommended for optimal results, you can always stop or restart the brush at any time by pressing the power button. Whenever the handle is placed in the charger, the Smartimer automatically resets to ensure a full brushing cycle the next time you use it. You will also be notified, via three rapid beeps, that you have three or fewer brushings remaining.

- On-Off button wore out
I have had two Sonicare toothbrushes and they both failed the same way, the on-off button wore out in about 1 year. Does a good job brushing, but will send you to the poor house. Also, as noted in several reviews, once the batteries are done so is the unit.
I won't be purchasing a third unit.

My hygienist recommended the Philips Sonicare toothbrush to me a while back, and am I ever glad I listened to her. It WORKS! I was lucky enough to get one (the e7300 model), for about $80 from Amazon back when it was being first introduced in 2008. Ever since I started using it, the number of cavities and the amount of tartar and junk on my teeth has decreased, and has virtually been elimintated now. Having some replacement brush heads makes a lot of sense too, doesn't it? It does feel pretty weird ... Read More

I convinced my husband that this toothbrush would make a perfectly acceptable Mother's Day gift...in 2002. My husband and I used this brush 5-6 times per day for 7 years and it finally gave its last performance. Some electronic part beneath the power button finally broke and it would no longer turn off.
I will replace this brush with another Sonicare toothbrush (am still investigating which model). I have been extremely happy with Sonicare's cleaning results (we even bought our children ... Read More

I've had this toothbrush for three years and it cleans well. But I have to question the price at $9,999.00. But then again, clean teeth are priceless.

This is my second Elite, my other lasted 6 years of everyday use by two people. This brush dramatically improved my oral hygiene. I only wish it was available when I was younger. I'd recommened the Sonicare to anyone.
