Judging by her current pose, the Material Girl has mutated into the Military Girl. Indeed, this time out Madonna launches an assault on the miscalculations of her past while also airing her grievances with a troubled world. Madonna has always jumped on trends, but, for the first time, she leaps and falls as she revisits the minimalist synth-pop that she helped define in the `80s and raps like Debbie Harry about lattes and nannies. She also divulges career and personal missteps that her audience recognized all along, and had already forgiven--or embraced. With the exception of the entrancing Bond film theme "Die Another Day," the music doesn't measure up to 1999's Ray of Light and '00's Music. And while Madonna has never been a stunning wordsmith, there is a distinction between the introspection on those albums and the self-absorption of American Life; the lyrics here often put one in mind of a cathartic letter one writes but never mails. --Beth Massa

Rating:
- Disgustingly offensive
"American Life" is 11 tracks of tactless, "serious", (and for the most part) straight-faced pop songs of Madonna whining about her enormously petty set backs over the past 20 years. Namely, poor reception to her god awful "Swept Away" movie, her annoyance with the shallow entertainment industry, and how dissatisfied she is with her wealth.
Are you f---ing kidding me? This is easily the most irritatingly naive and downright disturbing collection of lyrics I've ever read. Who the hell ... Read More

- I thought it was weird....
So, I've reviewed some other Madonna albums, and some people don't like my reviews. But it's my personal opinion and it seems to go along with most of mainstream America. When this album came it was weird! I thought Madonna had really lost, and that she was about to be a has been. I hadn't been a huge fan of music, but liked ray of light. I was disappointed when I tried to give American Life a chance. It also fell at a bad time as well. The Iraq War was starting, and many Americans were divided on ... Read More

- Madonna's most personal album-- very deep!
When first hearing this album, I was very overwhelmed, with all the power Madonna put in her songs this time---- some songs are very strong, while others are very soft. I'm going to breakdown my review!
1.) American Life- 8.5/10
Madonna gives a really interesting message in this song, with her whole new attitude. It's interesting to see her critique the "American Life" without really saying anything offensive directly. I think the song is good but not my favorite from the rest of ... Read More

- Not one of her best albums
On this album, it is clear that Madonna knows how to speak her mind whether you like it or not.Clearly, critics and album sales prove that people did NOT like it.While most songs have a good dance beat to it, that's about the best part of the album.
Rating:
- under your skin
Very artistic effort. It seemed that after this album, Madonna decided to embrace escapism, seeing that the bare reality displayed with this album didn't translate into her usual massive album sales. The public just couldn't face the honesty she was trying to convey, with the lead single in particular, and she was sort of...neutered. To remain relevant in pop culture, she was then forced to make two very commercial pop albums. Confessions and Hard Candy are both very good for what they are, but this ... Read More
