A classic screwball comedy with a supernatural twist, Topper starsthe incomparable Cary Grant and sparkling Constance Bennett as George andMarion Kirby, a fun-loving couple who cap an evening of jazz and champagneby running their car into a tree. They return as ghosts with a mandate toliven up the straight-laced hen-pecked life of bank president Cosmo Topper(Roland Young), who's hungry for just such a shake-up. Before long he'sboozing, dancing, and getting into fights, all of which gives him a rakishreputation--much to the consternation of his wife (Billie Burke, bestknown as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz). The sequelreplaces Grant and Bennett with Joan Blondell, who can't quite compare, but she's charming in her own way. Topper Returns is a rambunctiousmurder mystery with some gorgeous sets and elegant cinematography--thesequence of Blondell's death and ghostly rise is dazzling. --BretFetzer

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great movies and a great dvd
I bought this two-movie dvd a year ago for $5-$10 at Suncoast video in their used dvd section. Both movies are completely charming. Most of what I could say about the wonderful casts has already been said, so there's no need to repeat it. As to the controversy over the quality of the transfer, I think it's as simple as this: the movies were made many, many years ago. Maybe it's unrealistic to think the prints would be as crystal clear as what we're used to with more modern movies. I will say that ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GOOD TOPPER!!!!!
The Artisan release is a fine set of two of the topper films. While they may not look as good as some of the more costly restorations, they are more than acceptable.Besides, it's the only DVD release of the original "Topper" available.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great movies but not at this price.....
I agree with most reviewers.....I loved both of them but what the hell is going on here with these people selling these at these ridiculous prices...both these movies are in Public Domain...I agree Hallmark & Artisan have done a great job on these movies...but $55, don't think so.....I just downed the Public Domain copies and made my own DVD.....FREE

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great golden dvd
I ordered topper/topper returns, it was just as described.I received it fast and it was very resonably priced.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A poor transfer of a great film (and its so-so sequel)
The divergence of opinion on the quality of this disc is remarkable. Well, here's my two cents' worth: this is a poor quality transfer, hardly distinguishable from a VHS rental tape. I agree with those who say that this DVD must have been mastered from a tape of poor quality, and the heavy compression required to fit two movies on a single-layer DVD has hurt the image quality even more.

Lack of detail, poor contrast, and jitter in the outer portions of the image are among the many visible ... Read More
