Conceived by the French director Adrian Maben as "an anti-Woodstockfilm," Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was shot in October 1971 in avacant, 2,000-year-old amphitheater--a venue chosen to accentuate thegrandeur and spaciousness of the band's Meddle-eramusic. This disc contains a new, 90-minute director's cut as well as theoriginal 60-minute concert film, whose production and effects feelinescapably dated. Maben's cut goes to great lengths to lend the film amore contemporary feel, but it's the earlier version that makes thisdisc such a gem, being more focused on the music and more wholistic invision. The anamorphic, 16:9 director's cut interweaves the Pompeiiperformances with fascinating but distracting interviews and musicsnippets filmed later (mostly during the recording of Dark Side ofthe Moon). The movie was originally prepared in a 4:3aspect ratio, however, and the widescreen version crops perfectly framedimages like the nine-square mosaic of drummer Nick Mason in "One ofThese Days." The original offers plenty of closeups of fingers on fretsand keys, with shots that are often luxuriously long in duration. Andthe picture quality from Pompeii is revelatory: outstandingly sharp andclear, rich in subtle grades of light and color.

Generous extras include everything from original posters, reviews, bootleg album covers, and song lyrics to a 24-minute interview withMaben. But for all the director's talk of the glorious acoustics inPompeii's amphitheater, there's little natural ambience to be heard. TheDolby Digital 2.0 sound is clear, dry, and two-dimensional, though notablybetter than any previous video release. --Michael Mikesell

I love PF and i love the original movie. The new stuff is a distraction at best and I skip it every time. The best part of this edition is that the original movie looks and sounds great.

ECHOS Part I & II on this may be the single best piece of music ever created anywhere in the history of man.If you are musically mature enough to handle this, then you should really listen to this.I think this was as good as it got for Pink Floyd. This was it.The epicenter of goodness.

I dont care if the directors cut isn't that good.It doesnt matter. This director still came up with one of the best ideas ever, in the original. As far as I am concerned, he deserves to be ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What a disappointment!
Don't get me wrong. The original release of Pink Floyd At Pompeii is amazing. Legendary. What's been done in the name of a "Director's Cut" is nothing short of blasphemy. Lousy, pointless 80's style graphics and some innocuous interview material that should have been added as an extra - not part of the movie. (In the original release there were some behind-the-scenes footage of the band recording Dark Side Of The Moon --- that material worked well in the context of the film.) Oh and don't even get ... The first time I saw this I was excited and found when viewing this film that not only do you get to see pink floyd displaying how extremely talented and creative they are, but get to see them as individuals struggling with the world around them, their relationships with each other and themselves. very cool rare footage of pink floyd during the recordingof dark side the moon! They play live and oh man is it swweet!
