One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven Stolder

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Better value than iTunes and MP3s
I've been hoping for a Black Sabbath "give in" to sell their catalog digitally so I could conveniently purchase digitally, but could not complete my iPOD collection without Black Sabbath, so I "gave in", and bought the box set. This purchase reminded me of the beauty of good old fashioned CDs with covers, artwork, lyrics and all!Much happier with the physical box set than the digital would-be set.The book that comes with the set made it worth it alone, plus the DRM freedom i want. This is ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - To not give it five stars would be blasphemy.
Let me just put it this way - for a heavy metal fan to try to review a box set of the first eight Sabbath albums is like a gamer trying to review the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Proper accolades are futile. You cannot critique the work of gods; neither you nor I are within China's distance of worthiness. So, I won't attempt to review. I'll just fawn a little bit.

If you don't own any Black Sabbath albums, you're a poser. A phony. A disco fan. Whatever you are, it's never ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Totally awesome.
THIS is how box sets should be done! Not only is this stuff remastered, but there were a few things I wasn't expecting. One, the book that comes with it. Never knew this had a book, but it's excellent. It has a Sabbath timeline, quotes from other musicians, and a ton of Sabbath history and trivia. Also, THANKFULLY all of the lyrics from every album is in the book. I bought The Rules Of Hell Box set the same day, and this did not have the lyrics, which I think sucks. Also, I didn't know that a bonus ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Perfect for any Ozzy Sabbath Lover!
If you are looking for all the major Sabbath albums with Ozzy, minus We Sold Our Souls for Rock N' Roll, this is it.It comes with a really cool black velvet book briefly describing Sabbath's history that is accompanied by some very cool pictures and DVD with four of their videos.Damn Ozzy was skinny in those days.
The music has been remastered so it now sounds as they intended it to.The original releases are from recording sessions performed in substandard conditions. So every song has ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - OUTSTANDING, A++++ QUALITY
I have been a Black Sabbath fan for about 30 years now. The sound quality of the "Black Box" versions of these classic, legendary albums are the best I have ever heard...period, bar none. This set is a MUST OWN !!!!
