Cable networks like Showtime are diving into risky material thatmainstream movie-makers shy away from--and Soldier's Girldemonstrates the payoff of such risks. Barry Winchell (Troy Garity,Barbershop), new to an infantry base in Tennessee, gets taken to anightclub for drag performers by an obnoxious fellow soldier, Fisher(Shawn Hatosy, Outside Providence). There he meets Calpernia (LeePace), a transgendered performer, and feels an immediate attraction. Butas Winchell's relationship with Calpernia develops, his relationship withthe repressed Fisher grows dangerous to his career in the military--andpossibly to his life. Based on a true story, Soldier's Girl tacklesits delicate subject matter directly but respectfully, with compassion andintelligence. Garity, Pace, and Hatosy all turn in compelling, complexperformances, steering clear of stereotypes. Director Frank Pierson(screenwriter of Dog Day Afternoon) skillfully avoids easy answersor obvious solutions and was deservedly nominated for an Emmy as a result.--Bret Fetzer

- "Love in a world of hate "
It has always amazed me how our country professes it's superiority over other nations by proclaiming itself the epicenter of freedom, but it's nearly always the last to endorse it. It's noble attributes are not automatic, as each isolated, maligned and vilified segment of society has to endure ridicule until a certain number of deaths have accumulated to grudgingly acknowledge what others already accept. This is one extraordinary and courageous story about Barry Winchell (Troy Garity) who dreamed ... Read More

- Different kind of film
This movie is not for everyone, but it is able to express love between 2 people, one Heterosexual, and one Transgender person. I was touched by the movie it portrays ignorance and prejudice very well. Worth watching, at least it was for me...The girl is beautiful.
Rating:
- An intriguing subject to follow!
When I first saw this DVD I had no idea it featured a ransgendered male and was transfixed by it as the 'story' unfolded. It was not a film of coersion - more of a deep loving friendship which turned to love for one another
Rating:
- Oh, to be loved like this....
So I'm partial to musicals. No, I'm not a gay guy.Actually, I'm neither.I'm also partial to true stories, and true crime.Boy, did this movie interest me.Oh wait!I forgot to add the essential element of mystery. It's there! And then dang it.....I fell in love.It could happen to me, right?
Rating:
- 3.5 stars out of 4
The Bottom Line:
A touching and poignant film that develops its characters and then moves towards an inevitable conclusion, Soldier's Girl might alienate people who find a relationship between a man and a transsexual unappealing, but those people would be missing out on a well-made and well-acted film.
