It will be many years before Journey's music will be known as anythingbut soupy '70s arena rock and embarrassingly overwrought '80s pop. Butthat day will come: the songs and the playing are just too good for thescorn and ridicule to endure forever. Journey: Greatest Hits DVD1978-1997 will do little, however, to hasten the band's salvation. In fact, if it weren't such a gift to those who love the music, a casecould be made for suppressing the disc's video content, so unimaginativeis most of the directing and so damning is the attire (or lack thereof).
But even if sweaty guys running around in tight jeans and no underwearisn't really your thing, the disc has its treats. There's MTV nostalgia, pure and simple--"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," with its mimed quaysideperformance and strutting high-heeled model, is perhaps thequintessential "What were they thinking?" video. We also get excitingglimpses of the early band (with keyboardist Gregg Rolie passing thelead-vocal torch to newcomer Steve Perry) kicking out classics like"Feeling That Way," "Lights," and "Just the Same Way." Many of the songsfeature live audio as well as video, and it's here, most notably in"Who's Crying Now" and "Stone in Love," that lead guitarist Neal Schoncuts loose with some extended licks. An unexpected pleasure is 1996'sheartfelt ballad "When You Love a Woman." The guys are aging gracefully,Steve Smith's drumming is better than ever, and the video itself boaststhe most tasteful production of the bunch. --Michael Mikesell

- Simply Outstanding !!!! This Collection Contains Some Rare Live Performances with Randy Jackson on Bass (The American Idol Guy)
This is an outstanding mixture of live performances & music videos of Journey from 1978 through 1997. It contains 18 songs. It mainly features Steve Perry on lead vocals, Neal Schon on lead guitar, Jonathan Cain on Keyboards & vocals, Ross Valory on bass, Steve Smith on drums, Gregg Rolie on keyboards & vocals & Aynsley on drums. You do get around 4 live performances with Randy Jackson (the American Idol Judge) playing the bass guitar, and he is good. I've seen Journey perform live before, and they ... Read More

- almost perfect
Worth the price for the cheese-fest of Seperate Ways and After the Fall videos.Catch future American Idol judge Randy on bass in the Girl Cant Help It video.
The concert footage looks HORRIBLE, dark, muddy colors all run together being generally poorly lit.Hard to tell the band member apart except Schon has a hilarious Mod Squad AFRO!These poorly lit live videos are dissapointing to an MTV generation Xer who grew up with bright, crisp, Bon Jovi in concert videos. Minus a star.

- Journey Greatest Hits
I have loved Journey since i was 15, and being able to re-live that time is great, but this dvd has problems. It's like watching an old chinese movie. Their voices and the music is askew. The music and voices and their mouths moving do not match. I thought i had bought a bad dvd, so i purchased a brand new one and it did the same thing. SO, if you love Journey, maybe try buying something else.
