A landmark of science fiction and horror, Alien arrivedin 1979 between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back asa stylishly malevolent alternative to George Lucas's space fantasy.Partially inspired by 1958's It! The Terror from Beyond Space, this instant classic set a tone of its own, offering richly detailedsets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, and a flawless ensemblecast as the crew of the space freighter Nostromo, who fall preyto a vicious creature (designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger) that hadgestated inside one of the ill-fated crew members. In astar-making role, Sigourney Weaver excels as sole survivor Ripley, becomingthe screen's most popular heroine in a lucrative movie franchise. Tomeasure the film's success, one need only recall the many images thathave been burned into our collective psyche, including the"facehugger," the "chestburster," and Ripley's climactic encounter withthe full-grown monster. Impeccably directed by Ridley Scott,Alien is one of the cinema's most unforgettablenightmares. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Citizen Kane of Monster Movies

Citizen Kane is a movie about a newspaper tycoon, Casablanca is about a love that was not meant to be and The Godfather is a gangster movie.

All brief descriptions of the three films listed above are entirely accurate and yet woefully inadequate.

Alien is a monster movie.

But what a monster movie.

The fact that it is also a science fiction movie could have doomed it right from the start because unfortunately too many people tend to ... Read More

In my mind, Alien and Aliens are tied as the best the Alien franchise has to offer.I haven't seen Alien Resurrection, and while Alien 3 is underrated and directed by style-master David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club), these two are the highpoints in the series, and perhaps the whole Alien/Predator series (though I feel Predator might give it some competition, I have yet to see it).NOt the best science fiction movie(s) of all time, but among them.

Unlike Aliens, which features a heavy ... Read More

I remember when this film was first released. I remember the matchbook game that they had for it. Simply due to the fact that I collected them because of the cool artwork. I was in 5th grade and even though I did'nt see the film till much later, my mother left me with an indelible impression. She said that the last 45 minutes were such, that it gave her the worst indigestion that she ever had.....

Many years later I was able to see what she meant. Instead of indigestion, I was struck ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Two Different Takes on a Classic
As someone who writes science fiction on the side, I have a keen appreciation of the genre. The Alien franchise of movies is one of the few series, in my opinion, to attempt to take the topic of aliens as extraterrestrial beings and portray them as just what they are:alien. It also takes human demographics and mindset forward and realistically portrays them as they would appear in the future. With Star Trek, all the aliens are humanoid and speak American-accented English, except for the evil ... Did anybody say ALIEN was an overrated movie in terms of critic? It is one of the greatest movies of the 20th century for the construction of the plot, the editing, the performances, the innuendos (yes, it has many), the pace. It was like Hitchcock making a movie in space. Just read the article on Wikipedia about it and see how this is a masterwork of the 7th Art. A must have.
