Product Description:
It's Robert Mitchum vs. Curt Jurgens as the commanders of an American destroyer and a German U-boat play a deadly game of cat and mouse. Noted for its underwater effects. THE ENEMY BELOW was directed by musical comedy star Dick Powell, who became a producer/director for feature films and for Four Star Television.
Amazon.com:
In The Enemy Below Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are respectively captains of a U.S. destroyer and a German U-boat whose vessels come into conflict in the South Atlantic. Both are good men with a job to do, the script noting Jurgens' distaste for Hitler and the Nazis and engaging our sympathy with the German sailors almost as much as the Americans. Made at the height of the cold war of the 1950s, the film delivers a liberal message of co-operation wrapped inside some spectacular action scenes and a story which builds to a tense and exciting, moving finale. --Gary S. Dalkin

This film is a story of 2 Captains. One American Capt. of a destroyer and one capt. of a german u-boat. Both just doing their jobs and wishing they were any other place. The german isn't a nazi and he's sick of the whole mess. Both men are experienced and both men have the respect of their men. It becomes a battle of wits and a cat and mouse game where both ships are being hunted. Directed by the actor Dick Powell who did an excellent job showing the horrors of being cooped up in a u-boat and it's ... Read More

If you love movies about submarines, this is well done. One of the classics, though at times the tension may seem a bit contrived.

- The Enemy Below
The Enemy Below is a sturdy WWII movie that stars Robert Mitchum & Curt Jurgens. Capt. Murrell (Mitchum) is the commander of an escort destroyer in the North Atlantic. This is Murrell's first command since losing a ship several weeks earlier. Instead of recuperating extensively in a hospital he has chosen to accept the command of another ship. We don't see Murrell for about the first ten minutes of the film; we do get to hear several of the sailors discussing their new skipper. In these few minutes ... Read More
