Based on a story by Clive Barker and skillfully written and directed by Bernard Rose, Candyman rises above most horror films by eerily suggesting that some urban legends--in this case a particularly frightening one--have a spooky basis in reality. The legend of the Candyman is a potent one around the high-rise tenements of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing complex, where the residents speak of a dark, ominous figure who appears when his victims say his name five times in front of a mirror, then mercilessly slashes them to death. Upon learning that the Candyman is rumored to live in one of the vacant tenements, a University of Illinois researcher (Virginia Madsen) investigates a recent murder at Cabrini-Green. She learns that the Candyman (played by Tony Todd) is both unreal and chillingly real--a supernatural force of evil empowered by those who believe in his legend. He is a killer made flesh by the belief of others, and the young researcher's investigation is a threat to his existence. What happens next? We wouldn't dare spoil the chills, but rest assured that writer-director Rose has tapped into a wellspring of urban angst and fear, and Candyman serves up its gruesome frights with a refreshing dose of intelligence. --Jeff Shannon

- Candyman Candyman Candym-zzzzzzzzz
If the title of our review wasn't a dead giveaway, this movie was incredibly boring. Candyman was released in 1992 and was dubbed by many as a top-notch horror flick. The 1990's was the golden age of horror, at least in Sid's slightly unorthadox view. This is a perfect example of what's wrong with the film industry. This certified snoozer gets the nod as a worthwhile flick while true 90's classics like Wicked Games and Death Ring(aka The Greatest Movie of All-Time) go overlooked. But we decided to ... Read More

- One of my horror favorites!
This is a really scary movie, thst's well written, and acted. Although it creates excellent psychological tension, if definitly belongs to the horror genre.
I didn't see this movie until I was married, I don't know how I cold have missed it! It takes place in the 90's and I don't feel the movie seems dated, now.

- Still scary
I re-watched a lot of movies that I vaguely remember watching as a kid and most don't hold up, especially the horror movies. One of the exceptions is Candyman which still scares the crap out of me.I really enjoyed the fact that the entire concept is based on an urban legend.
As for a recommendation, if you enjoy the early Hellraiser movies, you'll likely enjoy this movie as well. The scares are genuine and not based on cheesy effects from the 80's/90's.

- Better than expected!
This movie turned out to be more involving and structured than I expected. It tends to drag in the middle but it's complexity increases as the plot moves along. Overall: PRETTY GOOD!

- Classic horror
This movie is one of the best horror films I have ever seen. The premise and plot are realistic and scary, and the spinetingling moments peppered throughout as well as the visual effects make for a delicious treat. The ending is no less surprising than the startling relevations that come near the end of the movie. If you like a good story and just the right amount of gore, get this movie! :D
