The 22 tracks on Retrospective deftly chronicle the best years of the Animals, who were far and away the grittiest band in the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. Eric Burdon's magnificently raw vocals and the stabbing chords of Alan Price's Vox Continental organ gave their covers of American blues and R&B classic such as Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" an authenticity that no other British groups could match. Their rough sound also gave songs like "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Got to Get of This Place" a real sense of rage and menace. By 1967 Burdon was the only remaining original member and he formed a new band that eschewed the blues and R&B of his early years in Newcastle in favor of a psychedelic, San Francisco-influenced sound. Songs like "When I Was Young" showed he had a real gift for the type of personal songwriting that was becoming popular in the late 1960s while the lyrically obscure "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot" suggested he spent too much time hanging out with hippies. Even when they stumbled, the Animals were interesting, and when they hit the mark, they were as good as any band from the British Invasion. --Michael John Simmons

Rating:
- classic Animals
This group has been one of my favorites since I first heard them in the sixties I had the records but I find this cd recording to be a very good quality. Also to have all of their early music on one cd is great I do have other Animals cds but I like this combination.
Rating:
- Alittle disappointed
The service was fine but the product was not satisfactory.Unfortunately, I am not sure if the original album was this way (I think probably not) or whether this was some kind of remix or in-home production. But I ended up throwing the disk in the trash.
Rating:
- A Great Sounding Collection, But...
I have an SACD/DVD-Audio Player and I was excited to see the DSD info on the CD packaging. If I'd only read the other reviews to find out this is NOT an SACD. The mastering is excellent and The Animals never sounded so good, but why hasn't ABKCO relabeled this package? It is a bit deceiving on their part. If anybody wants to hear how amazing an SACD or DVD-Audio Disc can sound check out The Beatles "Love". I hope the record companies start releasing these superior sounding discs once again.
Rating:
- Not SACD but DSD?
Even if this were only a Redbook CD, it would be a great collection for those whose vinyl sounds like it was played on a road grader. While it is not an SACD recording (my player's SACD light does not come on), the package is clearly marked as DSD, the underlying audio format (2.8224 MHz sampling rate) used by SACD.Moreover, my player (in 8 channel output) was playing a center channel. So, I don't know what format this is, but it does sound good.Digital out to my A/V preamp was superb.
Rating:
- a great colletion of oldies from one artist
I RATE THIS 5STAR FOR ALL THE HITS, AND VARIATION OF SONGS THEY DID. I THINK IF YOU ENJOY A SOUL ROCK SOUND THIS IS FOR YOU. ERIC HAS THE SOUL VOICE THAT FITS ALL THE SOUNDS IN THIS CD.....ENJOY
