Though Amos Lee's music is frequently described as a fusion of folk and soul, such an equation fails to reflect the singular artistry of this impressive debut. Like labelmate Norah Jones (who guests on two cuts), the Philadelphia singer-songwriter recognizes the power of simplicity, distilling an emotional essence that cuts across categories. The opening of his "Seen It All Before" echoes Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"; the stunning "Arms of a Woman" channels Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember"; "Give It Up" cuts a classic Bill Withers groove; "Black River" has the sound of an age-old spiritual; and the closing "All My Friends" follows Van Morrison into the mystic. Throughout the song cycle, the bare-bones arrangements behind Lee's vocal flutter reinforce an organic unity that transcends genre. For all of the debts he owes to the music of the 1960s and '70s, the results sound timeless rather than retro. In his cautionary "Soul Suckers," Lee sings that "nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world"--and proceeds to prove it. --Don McLeese

- One of the best albums I'll ever own
I love Amos Lee. I hate to make comparisons, but I tend to tell people that if you like Norah Jones' style then you will like Amos Lee. Although he tends to take more chances with his vocal range than Jones (which I like), the soothing soulfulness is a commonality. His voice is soulful, passionate, soothing, and original. I enjoy hearing his voice throughout all his albums, but this one is truly my favorite because it captures the depth and vulnerability of his lyrics and sound. My favorite song ... Read More

- Nice to find a very strong diverse Debut release that has such broad appeal
I lost most of my music recently, and wanted to add some new blood into my aging collection of music.
In the past some of my favorite artists included John Lennon, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor to name a few, so as I was browsing Adult Alternative, I came across Amos Lee and thought I would down load the MP3 collection just to get more of an idea of who he was being somewhat impressed by the samples here. I can't tell you how pleased I was when I burned a copy of this album. The ... Read More

- Love his voice!
I was in Starbucks one morning and heard a song overhead that was so beautiful that I had to go back to the counter and ask what it was. Amos Lee - 'Arms of a Woman'.Had never heard of him.I went out and bought the CD.I love his voice.I don't like all of the songs, but most of them are wonderful. And of course, my favorite is 'Arms of a Woman'!

- Unbelievable Talent
I am not typically a person that enjoys jazz music or even close to it. I heard a 2 second clip of "Arms of a Woman" on a commercial for the album and I was intrigued enough to check it out. Well, I purchased the album and was blown away by the artist's vocals. I don't even know how to describe how much I like this album:) All music should be this good, and it is truly a shame that artists this good do not come around more often. Amos Lee has turned me into a true, lifelong fan. I am so glad that ... Read More
