Product Description:
Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.
From the Manufacturer:
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.
DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

The Philips DVP5140, is an excellent device. I purchased it to play DVD'sfrom the UK and they show wonderfully. I am also excited about the picture quality and sound.

- GREAT MULTI REGION DVD PLAYER
I have had this product for well over a year and half and it has worked wonderfully for me.All I ever did was open the package, hook it up to my tv and insert one of my region 2 discs.I have never had a problem with reading either region 1 or 2 discs, they always come in clear and beautiful.Would recommend this product, as I definitely plan on getting another for my other TV.

- OK, but I've had better
This DVD player does as advertised. It plays DVDs. However, the remote had no Fast Forward, or Reverse -- you can only jump ahead or back a section. If you pause or stop the DVD, and them come back the next day, it has turned off and does not remember its position in the movie. Also no subtitle key on the remote. I was looking for a great DVD player that did not need to do BluRay. I failed.

- GREAT REGION FREE DVD PLAYER - MUST HAVE ITEM FOR BRIT DVD FANS - HONESTLY BEST PURCHASE I'VE EVER MADE!!!
MANY TIMES THIS PLAYER ALLOWS ME TO BUY CHEAPER DVDS OFFERED IN OTHER REGION FORMATS ON AMAZON UK WEB SITE. IT HAS PAYED FOR ITSELF MANY TIMES OVER!!! I bought this player in October 2007. I use it constantly and it is still going strong almost two years later! REGION FREE RULES! I love British comedies, series, and movies, some of which are not easily available in U.S. Region 1 format. I love to buy from the AMAZON UK web site. It is so nice not having to worry about PAL, region, etc. with this ... Read More

- Good product, terrible tech support
This product supports many protocals (e.g. Xvid) and works well. But when the first video I tried didn't start with the "play" command, I called for tech support. First I was told that the player didn't support the -RW disk I was using (which I later found to be incorrect). So I went out and bought +RW disks as the tech recommended, and this didn't work either. So I called tech support again, and this time they told me that the avi file I was trying to pay needed to be converted to a file that ended ... Read More
