Amazon.com essential video:
This charming British animated short film (it's just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. --David Chute

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Family Classic
This movie has become a family Christmas classic, starting with my children and now my grandchildren. It is short enough to keep their attention (no words, only music) and has a very calming effect on all of us who watch it.As far as delivery of the product, it came in the amount of time specified. No complaints.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sweet and Tranquilizing
I first saw this on PBS, back when it was new, and I recorded it and watched it many, many times with my son. It's very soft and tranquilizing, as the landscapes are hushed by snow, and no words are ever spoken. The rest is all lulling symphony music, with a lovely vocal interlude during the sweeping flying sequence. It's a gorgeous little piece of work.

Now, the version I saw so long ago did in fact have David Bowie as the man introducing it.But this was an edit for American ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simple. Magical. Unforgettable.
This one belongs right up there with It's A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story. It is so well done that some of its charm is actually lost on children, in my opinion.

But...by no means am i saying that you shouldn't watch this with kids of any age. This film relies on zero 'Pixar' wizardry and 'celebrity' power (Bowie fans should look elsewhere for their Ziggy fix...geez). With an outstanding score and virtually no spoken words, viewers are transported into a fantastic holiday story ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Where's David Bowie?
This DVD of The Snowman was advertised as David Bowie, narrator. He does not appear on this DVD.I was very disappointed! This is an example of false advertising.I have been a loyal customer at Amazon for many years, I ordered this version especially because it claimed to have David Bowie as narrator.
