Looking for a smart, never-out-of-style singer who turns in a perfectly solid collection of Christmas songs, including a few surprises? J.T. is your man on James Taylor at Christmas, which is nicely balanced between pop and jazz selections, with more stately hymn-like fare and balladry. Always fine in his charmingly understated voice, Taylor and company try out the old gospel standard "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and the memorable "Some Children See Him." He smoothly cuts through "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" with a bit of jazz flavor, and reprises Joni Mitchell's increasingly popular Christmas song (even though it's about getting away from the holiday), "River." One of the album's most satisfying delights is Taylor's funky version of "Jingle Bells," sung in a kind of barroom stomp with the most intriguing phrasing since Barbra Streisand sang it in the '60s. Soulful and bright and moody as well (when Taylor sings "In the Bleak Midwinter," you believe it's indeed rough), there's barely a clinker here. -- Martin Keller

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not the best...
I had just bought October Road which I totally love, so I thought why not try his Christmas CD.Not so hot!I'd say four or five of the songs are pretty good, but the others are average or less than average. If I had to buy another Christmas CD I think I'd go with Bing or Nate.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - on second thought.....it's wonderful!
I too was slightly unmoved with Jimmy T's Christmas offering initially.I expected something somehow more 'personal' or 'special'. That was when it was first released. The following year I put it on and...shabang...it sparkled to high heaven and I've loved it ever since! So warm, so happy, so rich with little sprinkles of levity. He actually makes me look forward to hearing Jingle Bells, a Christmas song that out of his hands is worn to threads. It seems this Christmas work is a 'Goldielocks Delight' ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - a gift
I bought this CD last year and, in the busyness of the season, never really explored it till this afternoon when I brought my Christmas music back out again for the holidays. What a beautiful gift it is.There is a nice variety of styles, and the creative arrangements perfectly compliment Mr. Taylor's velvety voice. What I especially appreciated was the reverence by which the sacred songs were performed, especially "Go Tell it on the Mountain".It is my new favorite Christmas CD!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - I Like James Taylor. . .But not this one
I'm a James Taylor fan, and a Christmas music fan, so I thought this would be a terrific buy.And it just wasn't.

This is first and foremost a James Taylor record. The Christmas part places a distant second, as the arrangements are mostly non-traditional.His voice is clean and clear as ever, but Christmas is a really fun holiday, and there seems to be no fun in his singing.

I've never heard "Baby It's Cold Outside" (where he duets with Natalie Cole) where the couple sounds ... Read More
