It's more of the same from Shiva Rea with Fluid Power: Vinyasa Flow Yoga, and considering the quality of her previous DVD releases, that's a very good thing. With six pre-set practices (three intermediate "long flows" and three "short flows"), ranging from less than 30 minutes to nearly two hours, Fluid Power--described by Rea as a means to explore "the wave movement that is the reality of our fluid, quantum body" in order to "enhance circulation, longevity, and creativity and to satisfy amphibious longings," whatever that means--this is Rea's longest and most detailed presentation to date. Those familiar with her Yoga Shakti and Yoga Trance Dance will recognize certain elements from those programs here; Fluid Power generally combines Shakti's somewhat more traditional approach (e.g., poses that are held for several breaths) with the kind of creative expression fostered by Trance Dance, which favors constant, flowing movements (in the familiar downward facing dog, for instance, Rea encourages steady undulations of the spine, referred to as "circular wave patterns," as opposed to keeping the back long and straight). While there are many asanas that will certainly be recognizable to most anyone who practices hatha yoga (the cobra, bow, upward dog, chaturanga, handstand, and pigeon are just a few of them), Rea also brings her distinctive style to the practice; her "Dancing Warrior 1008," featured in the longest and most challenging pre-set sequence ("Backbend Flow"), uniquely combines backbends, twists, lunges, and more. All of this will take some getting used to. Rea notes that these practices are designed for "experienced beginners and intermediate practitioners," and everyone is advised to view the sequences before attempting them. Meanwhile, the "Yoga Matrix," with which users can customize their practice by combining elements from all six pre-set sequences in any order they choose, is one of the most appealing features of this and all Shiva Rea DVDs. Also as before, the cinematography is gorgeous (filming again took place at New Mexico's White Sands National Park), and the music is evocative but relatively unobtrusive. A second disc includes alignment tips for some poses, information about fluid vinyasa techniques, and comments by various experts about yoga and, yes, even quantum physics. --Sam Graham

- A yoga evolution
As a huge fan of Shiva Rea, I was quite pleased with this DVD. It is not like the usual vinyasa yoga, but rather an evolution to a more fluid, open yoga. So, cobra becomes a fluid wave of opening, which reaches cobra in a new way. I must admit, I didn't immediately connect with this new water-flow yoga, but the more I did it, the more addictive I found it. Now I look at the regular vinyasa yoga as kind of "old school." This DVD is one of my favorites, along with Yoga Shakti. It is challenging in ... Read More

- Inspirational background and energy
I love the music, background, and energy of this DVD. I liked how Shiva Rea's movements create a wave of motion throughout the body. This style does not seem the best for stiff people, though. Because of the frequent movements and rotations of the body, it's easy to twist a muscle. I would recommend warming up properly.
Though the DVD boosts over 200 minutes of footage, most of the segments involve breathing or dancing around "free form." I am not interested in the "dance" element of yoga, ... Read More

- Blown away entirely by this DVD
Shiva Rea- Fluid Power is the first one of her series that I have purchased and tried out.The location, music and the flow in which she executes the movement, just left me delighted with the beauty of the experience in her brand of fluid yoga. I have experience with other yoga videos like Crunch and Yoga Makeovers by Sarah Ivanhoe. I have also taken yoga classes in college, and perform the exercises in Yoga Zone and Namaste Yoga. This DVD reminds me somewhat of an Ashtanga Yoga class that almost ... Read More

- Great Instructor..Very Different Yoga DVD...Keep an Open Mind
I heard a lot of awesome things about Shiva Rhea.I missed her workshop when she came into Florida, so I thought I'd catch up on some of her technique/exercises by this DVD.I have to say her exercises are very different, and one needs to keep a very open mind when doing them. From my experience, I feel that she is coming from this angle:where the student can expand themselves through movements that are not traditionally yoga and are more modern movement. You can move like a baby swimming in ... - Not the best
Beautiful mediatative DVD. Not Shiva's best. I would not reccommend this for anything other than an intermdiate yoga practioner and strictly for a meditative purpose.
