Amazon.com:
This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Is the grass really greener on the other side of the road?
A myth in the cinema. It was the time when the Jews were trying to get out of the Soviet Union where private economic initiative was totally impossible and where the Jews were shown as being unpatriotic people. That's what the film is showing with two directions for the expelled Jews: the USA and Israel. But the film is a lot more interesting than that. It shows how traditions are lethal. Traditions kill any initiative and change in any social group, in any society. It kills the possibility to remain ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Truth in History
My favorite part of the movie is the music. I just love the Eastern Europen Jewish music and think it is important to preserve it for future generations.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Classic never goes out of style
If you have never seen this movie before, I'm sorry. This is one of my all time favorites, and always will be.It's a funny/silly/serious/shocking type of film.It will make you pay attention a little more to the real world, but still give you a wake up call to how "the others" think.By this, I mean the culture outside of your own.And then the humor kicks in.People are people, we all live our lives, just like a "Fidder on the Roof".

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Antisemitism in Russia before the first world war
On the surface this is a musical play about marriage for love
of the milkman's daughters:
1) a poor taylor
2) an intellectual revolutionary
3) a goyim
In the end it seems to be a story about Eastern orthodox Christian
Antisemitism and Anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire.
Saved from the later Stalinist purges,
we see them leaving for America.
That the Jews were just as prejudiced against the Russians living around them,
really doesn't justify ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Topol great in Fiddler movie
After seeing Topol in his farewell tour of Fiddler on the Roof on stage at the Benedum Theatre in Pittsburgh, I was anxious to purchase the original movie version. It was great......amazing how after almost 30 years, his performance was as strong as in the movie. I've watched the movie several times since purchasing it.A wonderful film for the whole family.Could probably do without the CD though, since it has nothing to do with the film.
