Robert Bolt's successful play was not considered a hot commercial property by Columbia Pictures--a period piece about a moral issue without a star, without even a love story. Perhaps that's why Columbia left director Fred Zinnemann alone to make A Man for All Seasons, as long as he stuck to a relatively small budget. The results took everyone by surprise, as the talky morality play became a box-office hit and collected the top Oscars for 1966. At the play's heart is the standoff between King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw, in young lion form) and Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield, in an Oscar-winning performance). Henry wants More's official approval of divorce, but More's strict ethical and religious code will not let him waffle. More's rectitude is a source of exasperation to Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles in a cameo), who chides, "If you could just see facts flat on without that horrible moral squint." Zinnemann's approach is all simplicity, and indeed the somewhat prosaic staging doesn't create a great deal of cinematic excitement. But the language is worth savoring, and the ethical politics are debated with all the calm and majesty of an absorbing chess game. --Robert Horton

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A true modern masterpiece
I highly recommend this film not only to fans of historical drama but for a truly well-made film. This 1966 winner for Best Picture is stellar in every respect; each craft delivers its best work and the acting is first rate.Paul Scofield won the Oscar as Best Actor in his first major screen role.Sadly we don't have nearly enough Scofield film work to preserve for posterity.Paul preferred stage acting and while I can understand his preference I mourn the fact that this great actor can't be seen ... For an older movie, this one is really great and worth watching many times. It is a very powerful historical story and I would strongly urge you to get a copy of it and watch it often.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Great movie, but a caution...
Excellent acting.Draws you in.Makes you think. But I want to share a caution that may seem minor to many people, but it bothers me personally and I know it bothers others:God's name is used in vain in the form of "GD" in this movie.I share that so that you will not be surprised like I was.

If I were under the pressure Sir Thomas More experienced, I only hope I could keep his integrity, humor, and grace...What a story!!!!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Film
A Man for All Seasons (1966)Starring: Paul Scofield, Wendy Hiller andDirector: Fred Zinnemann is a great film about King Henry VIII wanting to get a divorce and marry Anne Boleyn. King Henry wants More to approve the divorce. Sir Thomas More refuses to give up his faith.

If you are desiring Spiritual Enlightenment in a seemingly hopeless world, May I suggest you read My non-fiction book as well. (See Profile Above)
