After their wild experimental streak of the past decade, Wilco's sixth studio album might feel like a bit of a comedown. Sky Blue Sky is mellow, moody, and uncharacteristically monotone, opening with a pleasant jangle and Jeff Tweedy singing a simple song: "Maybe the sun will shine today, the clouds will blow away." He doesn't even follow it up with a barbed punchline. Could it be that the restless Chicago band has settled back into its gentle Americana roots--or does this sudden mid-career reappraisal represent Wilco's gutsiest move yet? Mostly written in the studio by the full band, it's certainly the group's most cohesive album in ages, presenting a dense song cycle padded with intricate guitar work, brushed rhythms, and '70s soft-rock accents. In places it sounds like Wings ("Hate It Here"), in others Harry Nilsson ("Walken"), and in the middle it goes a bit Grateful Dead ("Shake It Off").At the same time, there's a distinct sense of hearing a band finally at ease in its own skin. Sky Blue Sky represents the sound of Wilco finally pulling through its petulant adolescence. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description:
"Sky Blue Sky" has hints of early-seventies SouthernCalifornia folk-rock sweetness in the harmonies. The album is filled withbrash guitar solos that take songs like "You Are My Face" and "Shake ItOff" in unexpected directions.
Album Description:
2007 European tour edition includes a bonus disc with five non-album tracks, 'The Thanks I Get', 'Let's Not Get Carried Away', 'One True Vine', 'Impossible Germany' [Live] and 'Hate It Here' [Live]. Simple and soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for, like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their primeSky Blue Sky is as eloquently straightforward as Wilco's last studio recording, the Grammy-winning A Ghost Is Born, was daringly experimental. Tweedy's lyrics deal forthrightly with romantic separation and reconciliation, their bittersweet quality giving way, as the album progresses, to a more uplifting, redemptive mood. Warner.

This item was in perfect condition when i received it; just as the description said it would be.

Alt-country's seminal masters offer another master class as to why their songwriting stays consistently compelling in what on the surface could seem little more than contractual fulfillment but reveals sturdy layers and crafty composition upon each revisit.

- Vinyl version did not come with full CD...
Great album, my review is to let you know that though the vinyl version is marked "Include Bonus CD of the Complete Album", my copy came with a 3-song sampler...I am contacting Nonesuch Records about this but not holding my breath...
Rating:
- A gorgeous document about marital seperation.
None of the other reviews I've read here seems to have noticed that this beautiful album is a song cycle about a man (Tweedy) struggling to remain positive, hopeful and open-hearted while his partner has (temporarily?) left their home together to go back to living with her mother.
Rating:
- Not a Clunker Track on the Album
This is a great plug-in, listen start-to-finish album. All of the tracks are solid, yet different enough one to the next to keep your interest.Indeed, I find something new I like just about every time I listen.Guitarist Nils Cline brings a great new dimension to Wilco. His playing is very original if sometimes uncontrolled.Tweedy's lyrics are sometimes too introspectic and, well, depressing. But they are definitely deeper than the average lyrics without being heavy-handed.
