I got an HP laptop with Windows Vista that didn't have a modem installed.Got this to handle occasional telephone Internet access.Works well for me.

This USB modem works well with Mac OS X Leopard for web surfing, however the installation guide is not up to date for OS X 10.5.6 Leopardusers. I had to figure out on my own how to install it. If you have OS X 10.5.6 or later do this:
for STEP THREE: INSTALL THE MODEM DRIVER MAC OS X 10.4.3 OR LATER
complete steps 1 through 5 then click on the ADVANCED button. Then do step 6, select the modem tab, in VENDOR select other, in MODEL select USRobotics 56K USB modem. Check Enable error correction ... Read More

Bottom line up front: if you have a Mac, buy Apple's USB modem.Although this product's documentation and package label claim that it works with Macintosh, I found (the hard way) that it does not.
The details: I bought the product and installed their software (successfully, it said), only to find that it did not auto-answer incoming calls, nor did it receive and handle caller-id information.US Robotics technical support folks were courteous and helpful, but what I learned from them is that ... As noted in the title of this review - this modem works fantastically - simply plug and play on your Linux distro - at least anything modern. Flawless detection and implementation on ubuntu 9.04. A real gem of a product.
Only downside (and it's not this modem's fault - but I'll take a star off anyway) is that it's virtually impossible to get hold of one outside of the US. I had to get it shipped from Amazon to a friend in the US, who then forwarded it on to New Zealand. Come on USR - let's get ... Read More

- It works when you have no other choice.
It took awhile to get it to work on my XP laptop. I only got 14.4. But I bought it to use on my HP2133 mini notebook which does not have a telephone jack. It uses Vista. When you are in a location with no wireless and no Ethernet connection available, you have no other choice. So I bought it. With Vista it worked right away. I get a speed over 40 everytime. There is no sound when connecting. This is normal. If you need to get your email this modem works great.
