"You can't always get what you want." The Rolling Stones may have said it best, and it seems to be writer Hank Moody's theme song. David Duchovny (X Files) was born to play this sly, sarcastic, self-loathing, and--despite all the meaningless sex, booze, and fist fights--kind character. Writer Moody hates the Los Angeles world he lives in; a world that turned his sharp best-seller into a cheesy date movie, where his young daughter and should-have-been wife (Natascha McElhone) are slipping away into the hands of a rich play-it-safe guy, and where everything he truly wants seems just out of his reach. But the man hasn't lost all hope. "Happy endings may get a bad rap, but they do happen," he assures his daughter. "And when they do, they're just as true as the unhappy ones." One can't help but hope Hank finds his happy ending, because it's with his family that his soft side surfaces. Hank takes no shame in trying to woo back his "wife" Karen, even if it is in front of her new fiancé. He knows he's meant to be with her--plain and simple--and there's a glint in her eye that always makes you wonder if she's really thinking the same thing. And his daughter Becca? Well, any guy would melt against this guitar-wielding cutie (played by the adorable Madeleine Martin), but Hank really captures the "I'll kick a lot of ass for my daughter" mentality that so many dads harbor. He's also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment's notice to heed his daughter's call.

The rest of the cast, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Pamela Adlon (Lucky Louie), provide some surprisingly interesting and hilarious side stories. Just when it seems situations in this show can't get any more ludicrous or disgusting, they most certainly do. That's the beauty of it. Californication is a dark, coarse, edgy adult comedy. It's also very real, and quite intelligent. --Jordan Thompson

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great television.
Occasionally, you will find a season of television that, from the first to the last, is a complete knockout each and every episode. Californication Season One fits this description. Hank Moody is a GREAT character, and rarely do you root so hard for a womanizing alcoholic. You can tell he truly loves the mother of his child, and unlike more patronizing television, just because love is there doesn't mean it is going to work. David Duchovny is hilarious, and I was also surprised by Madeleine Martin ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Doesn't meet expectations
I like David Duchovny.I had heard some good things about Californication and had high hopes.Forty-something writer in a rut trying to get his life straight while navigating the waters of southern california, sleeping with lots of beautiful women along the way.Sounds promising. For me the show falls short and I guess you have blame the writing.Better writing might make the storyline more believable.Too many shortcuts taken to get to the obligatory sex, etc, and it quickly becomes repetitive. ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best ADULT shows on TV!
I love this show. It's great ADULT TV.I watched the entire box set over a weekend.Duchovony is great. It seems like this was a role he was born to play. The writing is extremely witty, the situations are funny, and best of all -- the twist and plot turns are unexpected which is something rare in tv these days.I actually found myself laughing out load on a few occasion.Kudos to the writers of the show and the actors. They are all fabulous. But be warned this is not a show for kids. It's definitely ... I love this show!I actually rented the season and thought it was so funny that I bought this for my brother who is in Iraq. This DVD has been passed around for months at his base because everyone thinks it is hilarious. One of the best show on right now.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Fun Show
I watched this show with some friends and thought it was a bit like some of the shows on mainstream tv, but with the twist of adult humor in it. The humor made it more realistic. "ball busting" comedy at points, but with a message in there as well.
