Rating:
- Everything you need to know about waste
The lesson that I learned from this book is: don't buy stuff! if you do, then check used stuff (craigslist, freecycle, thrift shops) first.
Overall, it is an excellent book. It is just what I wanted to learn about trash: paper, plastic, glass recycling; incinerators, landfills, waste treatment facilities. It starts out a little slow, but then it picks up and becomes a very engaging read. I would agree with one of the other reviewers that the author is surprisingly nonjudgmental - and ... Read More
Rating:
- Read it!
This book is actually a real page turner. It's changed the way I think about so many ordinary and mundane things, like recycling a beer can, throwing out leftovers, or flushing the toilet.
What happens with landfill? What did people used to do with trash? How filthy is the Gowanus Canal really? All these questions and more are answered in this book. There's even a feeling of adventure at times, as the author follows her waste and is not always warmly welcomed.

- A less glamorous: All the President's Men
What would you get if your doused All The President's Men, with sweet smelling sludge? The result would probably resemble Elizabeth Royte's epic presentation of filth, depicting the journey to its final resting place, showcased for the literary community. Garbage Land takes the reader on a comprehensive journey (emphasize on the word comprehensive) from the New York author's kitchen, to the many places of disposal. Garbage Land, begins with our involvement in the path to disposal. Royte dumps trash-bags ... Read More
Rating:
- poorly researched
I found this book to be a very poorly researched, and equally poorly written look at garbage...A very cursory examination of its topic...there are much better books out there than this one
Rating:
- A must read for those who throw away trash... EVERYONE!
Garbage Land is a well researched look into the world of waste handling. The book not only deals with garbage sent to landfills but also recycling both in the US and around the world.
Truly and eye opening book that changed the way that I lived and felt about the world.
An amazing book, now at an amazing price.
