The sky and outer space have fascinated man for centuries and the History Channel's series The Universe is the story of man's study of the cosmos from his earliest attempts to map and understand the heavens through modern day scientific studies, advances, and theories. A mix of historical footage, modern space imaging, and conceptual computer graphics presented in high-definition, the visual component of this production is absolutely breathtaking. Each of the 13 44-minute episodes begins with a general introduction of subjects ranging from the sun to individual planets, alien galaxies, the search for extra-terrestrial life, and scientific theories like the Big Bang. Each topic is then broken down into a series of segments that detail specific ideas, theories, or components integral to the understanding of the main topic as well as historical material, current studies and theories, and projections of potential future events and scientific advances. The 90-minute "Beyond the Big Bang" feature relates "the story of everything"--from the universe's formation following the "Big Bang" to its eventual projected demise from unchecked expansion dubbed the "Big Rip." Leading experts from universities and scientific institutions around the world do a great job of taking very complex subjects like galaxies with spiral density arms and relating them to easily graspable concepts like a city with a downtown core surrounded by suburbs and plagued by freeway traffic jams. Amazing photographs from the Hubble space telescope, infrared views from the Spitzer space telescope, and x-ray images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory augment understanding as do demonstrations of modern science's ability to simulate historical events like the formation of earth and to project future cosmic events. The Universe is a fascinating and understandable study of space that speaks to viewers ranging from the generally curious to the serious student ofcosmology. --Tami Horiuchi

- Awesome Show, a little pricey
For those of you who haven't seen the Universe on the History Channel, let me explain. It's a very in-depth, but not over your head description of theoretical and astronomical physics. The cast of regular scientists aren't just informative, but actually entertaining. You can tell this stuff genuinely excites them. The graphics sometimes are pretty wild too.
Unfortunately, this being the first season, they stick to pretty standard space topics such as "The Moon" and "Jupiter". Later seasons ... Read More

- Noisy Universe
You will enjoy this sort of TV documentary bringing the Universe in your living room. Each Blu-ray has fantastic color and texture rendering.
You will also learn the Universe which will become a close friend.
Maybe, on the negative side, it's a bit schoolish with too many interviews of scientists in their lab. Would have been better to include their comentaries on the movie itself.
Also, the music is rather noisy with its redundant bass frequencies.
Enjoy this encounter of the ... Read More

- Astronomy for the Lowest Common Denominator
Why is it that the rest of the world (BBC anyone?) seems to make science programming that challenges and educates the mind, but over here, science-related programming is targeted at children and poorly-informed adults?
Watching this, I couldn't help but "reverse-engineer" the History channel's perspective of its target audience. I deduce they regard us as slack-jawed buffoons, too focused on "American Idol" to have the patience to sit through a real science show.
As a result, ... Read More

- Best cost x benefit
A must-have for astronomy fans, although the 1080i resolution is not what we expect for a series like this.

- Amazing Space Related Series!
If your into Astronomy or Planets or Stars like I am, take my word and buy this series. I've yet to see the older Sagan series, but I'm sure it's great as well, but this one is on Blu-Ray, the information on everything we know is up to date, (2007 I believe) and it's 800+ minutes long!!!
A lot of the commentators are great as well, and speak in a clear English that anyone can understand. It's simply great! I can't wait for season 2 on Blu-Ray and any other Season they make afterwards.
